I've posted here before asking for advice for bridegroom attire. The wedding is set for April in California. The ceremony (very formal) is in the morning and the reception (significantly less formal) is at night.
I was originally interested in morning coat attire but have been effectively dissuaded from that position on two grounds: first, that morning coat attire, if done poorly, tends to look like a costume; and, second, if one is going to invest in a tailored option for a wedding, best to make it a garment that can be worn again for other occasions.
When I posted before, one of the responses included this image:

I'm curious to hear thoughts on the (1) the component parts of this ensemble -- the jacket, the pants, the tie, the shoes...for example, what color jacket is recommended for this look -- navy? or black? are the shoes essential? ; (2) the appropriateness of this attire for a wedding held in 2016, not 1930; (3) whether this ensemble would look formal "enough" without looking like I raided the wardrobe of a Gatsby remake.
Any insights or thoughts would be most welcome. Thanks in advance -- I always learn a great deal here and am grateful to those willing to share their sartorial wisdom.
