Rules about Pocket Watch Chain

I like how people are dressed in classical styles with pocket watch chains on their vests. My question is whether it is acceptable to wear a chain without a watch. Since I always wear a wrist watch, it seems awkward to me to wear two watches at the same time. I appreciate any comments.
