Fit vs. Fashion.

mardi 15 décembre 2015

Among some younger men recently come to attempts at dressing seriously/better there seems to be a belief that the fit depicted in fashion advertising is the nonpareil of stylish fit and that those who attempt to emulate it become by transference possessed of style. And that therefore proper fit and contemporary style are mutually exclusive. Nothing is further from the truth. Proper fit and elegance of line is as essential to style as it was in the 1930's, and all stylish clothing must have this, even if it is expressed differently. Bad fitting clothing can only ever be parody. And unless you originate the joke, you are the joke.

Among many, many examples of bad fitting clothing ad photos we find these -

OK, after this young fellow puts on his socks, he needs to give his little brother his suit back. Jacket too short, he*l, everything too short! And too tight! And while I selected this more egregious example to be obvious, I see young men trying to achieve a very similar fit, and thinking they consequently look good! And becoming irate if anyone points it out, while simultaneously labeling proper fit as archaic.

Well, it ain't. Some of the nicest looking clothing I've seen recently certainly isn't baggy, and it appears that the clients are mainly hip, young Asians. Jungyul Park of B&Tailor cuts some beautifully proportioned and proper fitting clothing which fits his young (Or not!) clients very well. Contemporary clothing can be classic too, fit properly, and have an elegant line, just like clothing of an earlier era.
