What can I get away with? (Trad-Non Trad Mash up)

lundi 19 octobre 2015

To make a long story only slightly less long:

I have not had need to wear a suit in over four years, and since that time I have (very regrettably) added 40 pounds. At least. So, unfortunately, my several suits (which never saw much use anyway) and nearly all my odd jackets (which received heavy use) no longer fit. Not even close in fact. Don't ask how, but working from home is a significant contributor, as well as life events beyond my control. So, goodbye tan camel hair. Good bye 3/2 brooks blazer. Good bye Press Linen Sack Jacket. Good bye assortment of Vintage Tweeds.

I somewhat urgently am required to wear a suit to two (maybe three) upcoming events, the first of which is a week away. So I have run to the local (chain) Mens shop, which is a brand you have all heard, and at least Joseph was there for me in my time of need. He can turn a suit off the rack around for me in a few days, so I settled on the least expensive (notice I did not say "cheapest", but could have) charcoal suit that fit will with minimal alterations. It is your typical 2 button, with darts, and double vents, and what felt to me like Trump level shoulder padding.

They asked if I needed shirts or accessories of course. I told them I have shirts in size and of course even with my weight gain I have not grown out of my very large selection of footwear, ties or squares. And as I was finalizing alterations I asked them to cuff the (flat front) slacks, and they said "Yes, I am glad you mentioned it because we would not normally cuff flat fronts unless you specified it". That got me to thinking and is the purpose of this thread:

I will naturally want to wear an OCBD with this suit, because it is what I am comfortable with, and it is what I have. I will pair it with a traditional tie such as Argyle Sutherland or BB#1 or similar repp style. But could I get also away with a bow tie? Will the OCBD itself be so out of place with this suit that I need to go with a point collar? And can I get away with wearing burgundy Alden Tassle Loafers or will I need to stick to some boring Park Avenues to not look mismatched and out of place?

FWIW this first event is an evening wedding but even still the ratio of male guests wearing a suit may not crack 50%. I just don't want to feel self conscious from the beginning because I will be wearing a suit I am not entirely comfortable with.

I hope the general question makes sense. This thread is mostly for entertainment and a little bit of therapy, but I am curious on input and more than a little serious.
