Today I attended a medical seminar at a university. I don't have a medical background, won't go into the details (unless somebody wants to PM me), but was scheduled to give a brief presentation. I considered the question and decided against wearing a jacket, knew I wasn't going to wear a tie. Looked nice, though, BB chinos, Orvis corduroy shirt...
On arriving, of the three doctors present, two were male. One wore a jacket and tie, the other a jacket. I should have worn a jacket, hence the rule of thumb for the title of the thread.
