I saw these old Florsheims and was wondering if anyone has an idea of what the odd-looking leather could be:

Could it be oxhide? Deerskin? Just badly done corrected grain?
Given that Florsheim in the '70s (and well into the '80s) was still using solid construction and making shoes in the USA, I would've thought they'd be using a decent leather back then. But this looks almost like vinyl--at least in these photos.
Too bad, because I do like their shape.
