Hi, Is the horn for horn buttons generally ground up and then molded and dyed? I'm assuming that this is needed to achieve a consistent texture and to avoid irregularities.
I've had a few sets of horn buttons and they tend to get a ring of white residue on the surface. My suitmaker introduced me to a new make of button imported from Germany that he referred to as "composite horn." It seems to be a bit denser and more polished with less of a problem of white residue on the surface.
Is anyone here familiar with this type of "composite horn" button? Any idea what type of other materials are mixed in with the horn? I'm assuming that the "composite horn" pitch is legit but I had never heard of it before my suitmaker introduced me to it. Does anyone here have experience with composite horn buttons?
