Gents:
An idea occurred to me recently and I want to run it by y'all. If it's bad, then I one lives and learns. No biggie!
It's simple and I believe thrifters, online shoppers, and, especially, newcomers would find it very useful!
The whole point is, from time to time we get threads where people ask what's a "reasonable" price to pay for a particular item? The "Price Index List" could erradicate that. Say you're in the middle of a shop or even browsing eBay and you're not sure if you're getting your money's worth, this list could be something to turn to for perspective.
Basically, we compile a list of specific items in different categories - sport coats, jackets, ocbds, belts, etc., - and we provide a "reasonable" price to pay for it depending on established set of conditions. Here's an example:
AE Park Aves:
--------------------------
New from AE - $400
From ShoeBank - $250
Suggested Price (SP) used - $150
The prices for new and ShoeBank aren't what we're interested in. We'll focus on the "SP".
Say I was on the hunt for used PAs on eBay and found one for $200 including shipping, it would be a bad idea considering a new one from shoe bank is $250. Why not just wait & add $50? So the list would suggest that a reader not go higher than $150 (shipping included) for used PAs. And we'll continue on this route 'til we compile at least a list for a beginner's wardrobe. If there's interest we could expand it further.
There obviously are some loopholes and potential problems with this idea, but once again, it's just an idea. Maybe someone might be able to improve on it.
Like I said, it's no big deal if it's silly. I would have learned something in the process - you can't put a price tag on trad?
