Shell cordovan shoe finish -- textured or smooth?

mercredi 18 novembre 2015

So I ordered a pair of factory-second shell cordovan Park Avenues. They arrived today but I am unsure if the "grain" is the reason these are seconds, or if it's something else. While it has a nice luster, the texture is slightly pitted and almost resembles orange peel you'd see on automotive paint. The coloring is also not as consistent across the surface of the shoe and between the L and R shoes.

When I look at the photos on AE's website, and through Google searches, they look like they should be much smoother and almost like patent leather.

Overall, my calf AEs look nicer...but is this just the nature of the patina for shell? Should I give a non-second pair a shot? I have to say that I really prefer the look of my calf shoes to this, though maybe I'm not giving it a fair shot.
