Does anyone else share my foreboding about the retirement of Ralph Lauren from his eponymous company and the rise of Old Navy president Stefan Larsson to take his place ?
Ralph Lauren has long been one of my most admired and favourite brands. I have particularly appreciated the quality of the products in their Purple Label, Black Label and Polo ranges (though admittedly I am not their target customer as cannot afford/cannot rationalise paying full price for them). Their made in Italy products in particular, made by St Andrews, Corneliani and Caruso, are very good quality and classically styled. The odd occasion that I have been able to pick up their Edward Green shoes in my size has been a delight.
Now I hear that the Black Label and Purple Label are to be fused into a single, lower quality, Purple Label offering. I have already noticed a lot of 'made in Romania' products seeping into their Purple Label line and also heard rumours that some of the (?Polo) suits will be made in Slovenia. Admittedly, this change of direction preceded Mr Larsson's arrival but I can't help worrying that the job going to an Old Navy "stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap" front man could be the beginning of the end for this classic American company, and it might end up a shadow of its former self like Calvin Klein etc is now.
Am I being too harsh ?
