The Ivy Style site (link below) links to an article in Lapham's Quarterly (yeah, I had never heard of it either) that goes back over a hundred year into the social, cultural and historical developments in Japan that made Japanese youth ready to embrace American Ivy style in the '60s.
A really neat read for that reason alone, but then at the end, it gets into some Ivy detail stuff about how Japan adopted "rules" (probably shouldn't be in quotes because they were presented as real rules in Japan) for Ivy dress - such as true Ivy shirts having locker loops and center box pleats or the sacrosanctity of the center-hooked vent - that had this Ivy fan geeking out.
Enjoy.
