I am about to take the plunge into the world of Northampton shoes, and I had initially settled on the C&J Audley (or perhaps Lonsdale) in dark brown. The most important criteria for me (besides fit, of course), is the quality of the color of the leather. I'm looking for that magical richness and depth that I hear so much about, and I'm willing to pay the premium for a handgrade.
In perusing the forums, I have read many older posts that seem to rate Edward Green as superior specifically in regards to their "antiquing." Is this still true today, or is that an outdated opinion?
I expect EG to be a better shoe based on the price premium, but probably for reasons that are not worth it to me. Perhaps the attention to detail is closer to perfection on an EG, etc. But the one thing I would be willing to pay for is if the depth of color on an EG shoe as a result of their finishing process is not something that a C&J handgrade can match.
Unfortunately, there are no C&J retailers where I live. I am going to make a trip to NY next month, and that's where I will make the choice. But I won't have that much time to go back and forth between stores comparing EG and C&J, so it would be helpful in advance to be armed with some insight from experts. Also, I am conscious of the fact that the shoes might look one way when presented brand new in a store, but very different after being put into practical use.
BTW - It will probably come down to EG Chelsea in dark oak vs C&J Audley in dark brown.
I know I will just have to see for myself, but can anyone give me a head start so that I have a shot at making the right decision in the one hour of time I will have to figure it out when I get there?
Crockett and Jones Handgrade vs Edward Green - is EG "antique" finish noticeably better?
