For some reason not entirely clear to me many members of this forum seem to be prepared to pay high sums of money for 100% wool material for their suits and some of those are not willing to settle for anything else than the even more costly high thread count versions.
Well it appears to me that having a percentage of polyester in suiting actually improves not only the look (due to lesser wrinkling) but just as importantly increases the lifespan of the suit several times over. Why anybody would want to spend all that time and money commissioning a bespoke suit using the finest 100% wool to only find it wrinkles and lasts 5 minutes before a hole appears in the trousers beats me. I get my suits made for me in Bangkok where the material is a wool/polyester blend which I've been wearing for years and still look great. In contrast my first suit was made from 100% wool where the trousers wore out in only 2 years.
I've had a pair of 100% linen Ralph Lauren trousers that shockingly lasted only for one summer season before wearing out.
Waxed cotton jackets is another example...I had a Belstaff motorcycle jacket made from 100% waxed cotton that began ripping and fraying in the areas that formed creases which I was forever sewing to repair. I've learned my lesson and have bought replacement waxed jackets made from a 55% cotton/45% polyester blend and it hangs so much better and is bound to last much longer as well as being less than a quarter of the price.
Are we just too snobbish for our own good on this forum?
Why I love polyester
