Outerwear Recommendations - Fall/Winter

I'm looking for what to wear with chinos and denim (which is increasingly rare).

I'm thinking a charcoal or navy wool 3/4 length coat, as it's still fairly casual but does well with wind and temperate climates.

Also, are trench coats acceptable woth chinos in addition to suits and trousers? I would be looking for one with a zip out liner. I see burberry, aquascutum and grenfell are the most recommended on most threads here and on SF.

I'm heading into NYC for the weekend for shopping and museums with my girlfriend and figured I'd hit up some stores like C21 and consignment shops. I'm also going to check out the Paul Smith sample sale next Wednesday.

Synopsis:

1. What coats for chinos that work for temperate climates (30-50)?

2. Trench coats a good option for chinos, trousers and suits? Brands?

3. Any other shops in NYC for discounts besides C21? I went to Daffy years ago, but it's been closed for a while.
