Proper "fit" of an overcoat

dimanche 18 octobre 2015

Greetings,

I just made a beautiful acquisition of a double-breasted chesterfield style herringbone topcoat from Ralph Lauren. I tried it on in store with a suit jacket on and it was very tight in the chest and belly; the salesman and tailor said it would be no problem to fix. I just received it and sure enough, they made it fit very well through the mid section.

The thing is, I am not sure how it is supposed to fit up in the shoulders. It feels a bit snug, and between the shoulders and armholes, feels like it is crushing my suit jacket. If I try to button my suit underneath the topcoat, it pulls in all different directions. The collar rolls, the buttons are pulled taught. It doesn't matter what suit I try it with or how much I fidget to make it look better.

I am pretty sure this isn't how a topcoat is supposed to fit, but wanted someone to confirm that I'm not crazy. The coat was very expensive, and I am worried they now won't take it back since its been altered (though they did the job). I don't want to be stuck with a topcoat that doesn't fit and costs a fortune. Both my suit and the topcoat are a 42. The suit was also from RL.

Thank you
