Need help in regards to different leather shoe up keep. Lost!!!

So when I use a leather cleaner it tends to take away the shine. I then can use a creme to get the shine back with either a cloth, brush or both. I get that part. My question...I matched the polish to my dress shoes. Meaning, I went for an exact match. This I can deal with. What about leather Chukka boots that I want to protect. Do I try and match that color or go generic? I guess I am asking for a really basic do all for protecting the leather with a recommendation of products. At least for general use.
