3/2 Roll Jacket

Why are these jackets so sought after? Was it popular in the glory days of menswear? Maybe just personal preference? For me I like the look simply because you don't see it often, most times you see the top or the top and middle button fastened. I also sort of like the button slit showing a little bit, I think it gives it some flare.

I am interested to see what the trad gents have to say??
