After graduating recently, I am assembling a more professional wardrobe. The discussions on this forum have been a great resource in separating fads from classics and teasing value out of the cheap and expensive options. I want to share my recent experience at Brooks Brothers, since it seems to be odds with the consensus.
Given the high praise of the Brooks Brothers OCBD here, along with their extensive size options (I'm apparently oddly shaped) and a seemingly very reasonable sale price, I purchased several of these shirts last winter. Unfortunately, I noticed now that a few shirts have developed tears where the gauntlet joins together. Since BB still has a two year warranty, I marched down to their store,
assuming they would make right. It did not go well...
The problem was met with puzzled looks from the sales staff, and the manager stated that this was "normal wear" and that they would not offer an exchange or refund. Tearing does not strike me as normal wear, and I left disappointed not only in their quality but also their service.
Am I being unreasonable here? Have my expectations of durability been irreparably damaged by years of (the same) denim and synthetics? Is there a hidden business opportunity for OCBD-insurance? Or do I need to look beyond Brooks Brothers for good quality and service?
