AE Grayson sizing/fit compared to Park Avenues or Strands?

samedi 31 octobre 2015

I normally wear a 10D in the AE Park Avenues and Strands. However, while the length is perfect, I need to add tongue pads. Is the vamp on the AE Grayson high enough that they will fit like the other AE shoes I have? Should I size down at a 9.5? For what it's worth, I wear a 10 in a Sebago Penny Loafer and the fit is spot on.

Thanks!

I have a set of Dartmouth Blazer Buttons I removed from a Blazer I recently thrifted. Three front, Two for each sleeve. Not sure what to do with them and I really don't want to just toss them. Can anyone use them? Are they worth anything?

Recent AE experience

Fair warning- this is kind of a long read.

I wanted to start this thread to mention my recent experience with Allen Edmonds. As you all know, I started upgrading my shoes back in May, when I started a new job that required a suit 5 days a week. AE was the obvious choice for entry level at a decent price point, and I quickly had 6 pairs in my closet (with a few more targets in the foreseeable future)- long story short, they're affordable and fit me well (and the 108 last has no break in period for me, for some reason).

As part of this spate of acquisitions, two places have helped me get most of my shoes at less than retail- Jos A Bank and Shoebank. With JAB, a friend of mine is a store manager, so he's been able to discount shoes further for me than their pre-existing discount. Shoebank, however, has been less than seamless- the issues I've had with the shoes I've received from them have been fairly well documented here. The first pair I ordered was the Mora 2.0 double monk, which took three tries to get right- the first two pairs had significant separations between the lining and outer leather, in addition to wrinkling and "tiger striping." I finally talked to a SA who told me those were issues inherent with the shoe and finish, and was able to finally get ahold of some that were in good shape.

After a while, I decided I needed to get some loafers, as I had finally gotten rid of both pairs of Cole Haan bit loafers and had long worn out a pair of Bass Weejuns (the Larson). I wanted to focus on getting a penny loafer first, and was drawn towards the Patriot (in large part from the comparisons to the Alden LHS, but I'm a sucker for advertising, and the ad copy about "the next American Classic" and "at home on the country club" contributed as well). Long story short, the first pair had excessive wrinkling on the toe box, and the second pair was too small. Positive customer service experience #1:

I wore the second pair of Patriots a couple times to try and break them in- each time I wore them to my office, the pain caused me to switch shoes within an hour. I should've worn them around my apartment for a while, but thought the tightness was just symptomatic of the new shoe. Not so- the shoe was tight enough across the strap that I started to get concerned about causing damage to my foot. This only lasted for 3 wearing shorts before I realized I needed to get rid of them. I called AE CS to explain that I had tried wearing the shoes and I understood that was outside the return policy, but wondered if they would make an exception for an exchange. They had me mail the shoes back, and after examining them, told me that they would make an exception this time since I was a "good customer". After having done some research, I told them I wanted to exchange for a pair of brown Cavanaughs- I had tried some on in the store by my office, and the fit was great. The SA asked if I wanted to do an even swap, or pay $40 extra for a first quality pair (this was during the Rediscover America sale), and I told her to just do the even swap.

I received my first pair of cavanaughs in the mail, and they looked like they had been fed through a wood chipper- streaked finish, gaping holes in the upper by the heel counter, wrinkled/bubbling leather, and a crack in the upper of the right shoe. Without even trying them on, I asked for an exchange and sent them back. The second pair came in yesterday, and while everything was flawless, I tried them on and was immediately reminded of the Patriots- the heel was so tight I though I was going to pull the skin off my Achilles' tendon. This brings me to positive customer service experience #2:

I stopped by the AE store by my office last night to pick up some new laces for my Stafford boots. While I was there, on a whim, I asked the SA if I could try on some Cavanaughs. While I was trying them on (and remembering why I had found these so comfortable originally), he and I started talking about my recent experience with loafers (he agreed with my comments on the 606 last) and my experience with Shoebank (he apparently used to live by an outlet and saw firsthand how picked-over the selection could get). I also told him that I wished I had taken up the SA's offer over the phone to get Cavanaugh firsts instead of gambling with the seconds. I've only purchased some polish and laces at this location in the past, but he offered to order me a pair at the Rediscovering America sale price and let me return the seconds to him instead of having to mail them myself. So I'll have a new pair of Cavanaughs by the end of next week.

I know this has been rambling and the SA's gesture may not seem like much, but customer service stuff like this is a big thing for me- for the lack of success that I've had with Shoebank, AE employees (at both the HQ/returns level and the retail level) have continued to try and make it right. I can't necessarily say I'll take the gamble with Shoebank again, but Daniel at the AE location by my office will certainly be getting more of my business.

TL;DR- AE has a very happy customer in Orange Fury.

BB styles and fit questions...

vendredi 30 octobre 2015

Hello everyone!

Tonight bought 2 Fitzgerald suits at BB. This brings my total up to 4 Fitzgeralds taking into account the ones I bought a couple of weeks ago. I thought I wanted a Milano, but while those fit me very nicely around the waist, my arms and back where about to literally burst out of the suit-this was going up two sizes. .......Really even in the Fitzgerald style my arms seem to fit kind of tight, but it's really the best fit I have been able to find. Otherwise I have to go to their older styles, which to me look like sun-dresses.

Anyway, in the Fitzgerald cut, I fit pretty snugly into a 38S except for the arm issue noted above. The two I bought last week where 38S. One of the ones I bought today was a 38S but on another one I went with 40s- two sales people and I agreed that on that particular Fitzgerald suit, 40S was right. They explained to me that it was because it was their saxxon wool which according to them is tighter than their other types of wool. I don't think they where trying to sell me something because I bought from the same person a couple of weeks ago, and also because I mentioned
from the start I was wanting to get 2 more tonight.

So so is that true? Are their "saxxon" wool suits a tighter fit?
is it normal to go up a size within the same style of suit?
Is there anything I can do about the arm issue? I do lift weights, but I am not a body builder, just lean and muscular, and I am finding that even going up to a huge suit that just swims on me, the sleeves are a tight fit.

Thanks

Wrinkles in raincoat

I purchased a Todd Snyder raincoat, the one actually featured on this PTO article http://ift.tt/1NH9RD4 which IMO looks great!

It is a poly/linen blend (50% poly, 25% cotton, 20% linen), but it wrinkles quite badly for outerwear. Taking this to the dry cleaners worked out the wrinkles for a day. I tried ironing this myself over a press cloth with moderate results, that would essentially require me ironing this every night prior to each wear which is not ideal. I have googled quite a bit and all the wrinkle management guides I have found are targeting full linen fabrics. I followed these instructions with the press cloth with no real change. I suspect the answer is no, but is there any way around this? Maybe using starch spray? I still cannot figure out how a 50% poly fabric wrinkles this bad! :(

Alden Can't Change Width ?

I could have sworn I had read here that if a pair of shoes were sent back to Alden for restoration, that they could make it a size narrower by doing the refurb on the next last width size down.

But the lady there on the phone said no, they cannot.

Anyone remember this subject coming up ever ?

Thank you.

Bands of fabric inside front of dress pants?

I recently purchased a very nice pair of (previously owned) flat-front, slim fit dress trousers at a consignment shop. They fit me well, and appear to be a bespoke garment (no brand name, and a pattern and serial # on the label).

I initially thought they were women's trousers due to the lining in the back, but I noticed later that the tab and fly open to the left, and they have a real back pocket and are a bit boxy at the hips, so they may be men's trousers. They fit well, so I don't care.

What I noticed is that there are bands of fabric stitched at the side seam and to the fly on each side. They are not attached to the pockets, so they form "loops" within the front inside of the trousers. The fabric is 5-7 cm wide and is similar sturdy material as the pockets.

What are these bands called, and what is their function?

blazer question

Hello all. I've been lurking here for years and getting all the info I need, but now I have a somewhat pressing question for which I can't find an answer.

Does anyone still make a maroon/burgundy blazer? This isn't something I would wear normally, but would like to have it for FSU football games.

I've found plenty of them on ebay, but the problem is I want one that isn't a herringbone weave with 4.5" lapels and the buttons down by my nuts. Does anyone make a standard blazer in this color?

Thank you so much for your help.

New cotton Targyles - Fall 2015

I was at Target yesterday and saw that Targyles have been released in some new colorways. While I appreciate that these are not universally admired by everyone in this forum, this year's editions are approximately 80% cotton and I have experienced decent longevity from their previous cotton iterations.

Hats and Formality

Hello, I am a newcomer to hats so I have a few questions. One, where can I go to find the best info (history and styling) on classic, quality hats like the fedora or pork pie? Two, what makes a hat formal? what are the details that make it so? Three, what is the best hat for a casual sport coat odd trouser combo? I'd really like to wear a fedora but I want to make sure the details are as casual as possible. Thanks!

Do you keep a beard? If so, why? If not, why?

jeudi 29 octobre 2015

Yes. I had basically been clean shaven for as long as I can remember. I attempted to grow a beard when I was much younger, but it itched a lot, and I assumed I couldn't grow one.

I pushed past the itchy stage, and I'm definitely satisfied with it. I enjoy maintaining a trim beard much more than I enjoyed shaving my entire face every few days, the look and feel is also more comfortable to me.

Summary of Trouser Materials

Hello all,

I am quite fortunate to have secured a job after graduation where the daily dress code is business casual. While I love my suits, I am excited to be able to show a bit more individuality by wearing my many blazers and sport coats. But in my still-adolescent sartorial journey, I have been tripped up by my trousers.

I have struggled to figure out the different functions of various trouser materials and the circumstances in which they are appropriate. Living in North Carolina, and soon moving to north Texas, I principally worry about wearing trousers made of material too heavy for comfortable use. And secondarily wearing colors that are inappropriate for certain seasons.

The main source of my confusion is over the color grey. I currently lack a suitable pair of grey trousers to wear with my sport coats and blazers, and I've been paralyzed to make a decision. Should grey trousers be strictly wool (worsted in warmer months & woolen in cooler months)? May they be cotton chinos? Do certain shades of grey work better in winter vs. spring vs. summer?

Perhaps a review of what I currently own (and what I feel comfortable wearing to the office) is in order:

- LE khaki chinos - tailored fit, no cuff / half break
- LE navy chinos, tailored fit, 2" cuff / no break
- LE coffee brown chinos, tailored fit, 2" cuff / no break

I've seen the LE soapstone color in person, and I quite like it. But should grey be worn in cotton trousers?

Additionally, I would be grateful for suggestions on other colors I should consider.

Thank you all in advance!

Fall 2015 Shetland thread

I think we've had one of these the last two years, no? I'd like to start by asking who can tell me how the sweaters from Harley's of Scotland fit. There's a vendor on eBay who must have some older overstock: http://ift.tt/1MY7OYo. I would love one of these in almost any color; hell, I'd totally wear a lavender Shetland crewneck. I usually wear a 46L jacket, or a baggier 44. Is someone close to me in size who could suggest whether I should get an XL sweater?

Want to purchase a leather jacket

I'm interested in purchasing a leather jacket, something like a bomber jacket, that costs below $500. I checked out the LL Bean, Lands End and Eddie Bauer web sites, and they all sell leather jackets, but am wondering about the fit and quality of the leather. All are made overseas. I also took a look at ebay, and it's possible to buy older leather jackets by these same companies that were made in the USA for under $100, however, I wonder how wise it is to buy a vintage leather jacket. The savings is nice, but I am looking at this as a long term purchase and hope to buy something nice looking and long serving. Plus, I would hate to get something expensive through ebay and then not have it fit accurately. So you know, I wear a 42R sport coat. I know there are scattered dealers in the USA who sell and/or make these jackets, but the prices are out of my range. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions?

Anyone familiar with JB Clothier in Los Angeles?

Is anyone familiar with JB Clothier in Los Angeles? http://ift.tt/1M0j2vv

I have heard some good things about them and after speaking with Jerry (the owner) I am considering giving it a try.

After speaking I get the ballpark estimate of about 1500 for a bespoke suit, fully canvassed, pick stitched, functional buttons, with a nice wool/cashmere fabric. Does this price sound good? And more importantly, can anyone speak to the quality of their work? Another option he said would be to start with one of his ready ready to go garments and do a mtm thing to get a perfect fit...which he said would be more like 1000.

Thoughts?

Or anyone have any other experience with custom work in Los Angeles they might recommend?

Thanks.

Brooks Brothers sizes for other fits help

I'm a 42S if I wear a Fitzgerald suit/blazer as my stomach is around 38-40 circumference and my waist is 36-37 circumference. If I were to wear a Milano, Regent, or a Madison fit blazer/suit, what would those respective sizes be?

Also I understand that they're "fits" meaning they're supposed to fit a certain body type as I was told by my BB SA that the Madison are supposed to fit for "really large" men with, sorry to say, bigger guts.

Thanks!

Thoughts on this Lands' End topcoat?

It's 40% off a single item today, and I really do need something for walking to the office in the winter. My camel hair coat isn't always my first choice. Is this even formal enough to wear over a suit?

It'll be about $149 (normally $249). 65% wool/25% polyester/5% cashmere/5% other, fully lined. They also claim it's water repellent.

Amsterdam, Netherlands Clothing advice

I will be traveling to work in Amsterdam for a couple of years and am looking for advice from members. I have not been to Amsterdam or even Europe, pls ignore if my questions are dumb!

I'm not sure on the work dress code, but I'm sure its dressy as our office in US is Business Casual. Is Tie a common thing? Do I need a trench coat? Considering I have been in LA I don't have much of winter or rain wear.

Considering the rains in Amsterdam, and I wont be having a car for sometime looking for advice on how to keep dry. Should I rain protect my dress shoes(AE primarily) or just use an overshoe?

Are there some must buy clothes or accessories from here before I leave?

Winter layering: what do you do?

mercredi 28 octobre 2015

Right now I'm living in a country that has no centralized heating and its driving me crazy.
outside is cold so I wear about 3 layers to stay warm (a uniqlo heat tech, a thin sweater or flannel, then a coat).

However inside public transportation, its crowded and the heater is on strong, so its very hot, even in just the sweater/flannel! I just wanna rip it off and wear just my undershirt

Rooms vary significantly, some are cold, others are warm, others are too hot. its getting frustrating transitioning to so many temperature varieties.

just curious to how you guys deal with layering.

A brazilian guy and american guy from california in my building, all they do is just wear their normal spring clothes (undershirt and regular shirt), and put on a thick jacket or puffer all the time, that's it.

some of the locals here do 4 layers. undershirt, regular shirt, some kind of thin sweater, i'm guessing merino wool, then a coat.
Winter layering: what do you do?

Trubalance and Barrie... yes, again

Apologies for yet another post on this well, well-worn topic, but I did notice the last to come up in search was a few years back - the time has come for another ask!

My well-fitting shoes seem to vary all over the place but I was fitted for an 8E in the Park Ave (only shoe I've ever worn an E in). However, I also wear an 8D in the Barrie LWB; the 7.5D didn't quite work for me - seemed not wide enough and perhaps a trifle short. The Barrie is not the best fit I've had - shallow and wide heel, and miles of toe room, but forefoot feels good and ball is at flex point.

I'm now investigating the purchase of a pair of 403s. From what I hear, the Trubalance fits like the Barrie but also seems to fit wider and higher volume all around (good for my foot). Any thoughts? I'm wondering if a 7.5D might actually work out and eliminate some of the irritation I have with the Barrie

I will of course try before I buy and all that, just wanted to get an initial read.

Many thanks!

Help...champagne taste, beer budget

hi all,

I am new hear and very new the whole "wearing a suit" thing. I will be completing a 5 year full-time graduate school program in just a couple of months and need to suit up for my job search/interview process, and then for the real world beyond.

This is a second career for me, and I will be 49 at the time of my graduation (so not old by a long shot, but not a kid either). And the final onus for wanting to buy something really nice is this...I have lost just over 100 pounds in the past year and a half!!! I am only 14 pounds away from what my doctor says will my ideal weight. At the rate I am going, I have no doubt I will reach that goal by the end of the year.

So...here's where I need advice. I have been very excited for the first time in my adult life to go out and purchase clothing. I have done a fair bit of research, here and other sites, and know the difference between a well made canvassed suit with nice fabric, and a low line fused suit. I have been going to various stores here in LA trying on different styles, cuts and designers hoping to zero in on what fits me the best and makes me look as good as I can. Unfortunately, NOTHING I have tried fits as well or looks as good as a Zegna. Not the Z Zegna, which apart from being not so great a suit, just doesn't fit me correctly. i am talking about the emigliano zegna full line. I mean, I look and feel like a million bucks in it. Unfortunately the retail is $2700 (which seeing as I will need 3 suits right off the bat sort of feels like an actual million bucks to me).

Knowing what my size is and how it fits...and having a recommendation for a great tailor in my area that can do the very minor alterations I would need (just hem the pants and sleeves, and take care of a very minor shoulder roll), I would feel quite comfortable buying on line if I could find a good enough deal. I feel as though I need the standard Navy and Charcoal colors, and for reasons of my profession, I will also need a basic black suit. I've tried ebay and the standard solid colors just don't seem to show up much. And the discount online places I have found like blue seem to only carry the z-zegna

Where would be the best places to look on line for good prices on these Zegnas? I can probably go as high as a grand per suit...am I dreaming thinking I can find them for that?

Please...any advice would be most welcome (other than, try this brand or that brand...I've tried so many and really, these fit the best by far...so before I think about switching it up, I really want to try finding a semi-affordable route to get what I really want).

Open to suggestions.

Black or Tortoise Sunglasses?

I want a pair of RB3016 Ray Ban Clubmaster sunglasses. I am definitely going with a dark green lense. However, I am torn between the polished black frame or the tortoise frame. What goes better with my skin tone and in terms of versatility for outfits?

Here is the tortoise:

And here is the black:

FYI: I am an asian male with black hair and brown eyes.

I like that the black matches my hair, but the tortoise is very elegant and classy. Not sure if the tortoise will clash with my hair though. However, from afar, the tortoise will be dark enough to look black. Thoughts?

Carmina Shell Water Spots

I bought these Carminas a while back. Every time I get a drop of water on them, it creates a dark, dull spot that must be brushed for quite a while to return to normal. I haven't had this problem with my other pairs of shell (Hanover, one pair thrifted, one new old stock). Of course I've gotten water welts, but nothing like this.

I tried a treatment of Renomat, followed by a small bit of Allen Edmonds shell cordovan cream. No change. I've wiped them down with water and shined them back up again three times. No change. As a result, I can't really wear them. If I get a few drops of water on them while washing my hands, I have spots on my shoes until I get home and buff them up again. Any ideas? I saw another thread referencing Alden protector, but I've always read that you should never put weatherproofing on shell.

Do Cotton Shirts Always Shrink in the Dryer, or Only After the First Couple of Washes?

Hello,

Recently, one of my favorite shirts was accidentally put in the dryer. Normally, it is hung up on the basement clothesline to dry. It's definitely not the first time I've washed the shirt, as I've owned it for years. But I was worried about shrinkage because it was 100% cotton.

What I'm wondering is, does the dryer always shrink cotton every time no matter what, or is it only a problem during the first couple of washes and after that, non-excessive drying has little to no effect on the shirt's size? The shirt looks normal, but I guess I was just worried since it's one of my favorites and I'd hate to see it ruined.

Blazer - Slacks Combo

Have some dark navy slacks that I typically wear with a black and grey patterned blazer; which works fine except when I want to wear a distinctive patterned shirt, which then clashes.

So needed a solid blazer and found a navy one (not the typical blue blazer, a bit more stylish) which is not the exact pattern of the slacks and is just a tad lighter.

Is it okay to wear them together? (If not, I guess I'll just wear it with my black slacks.)

Your thoughts?

What brand and model are these boots?

Hi!

Does anyone know what brand and model these boots are (the ones the guy with the blue plaid shirt is wearing)?

http://ift.tt/1WiY0xf

They look a lot like Frye Wayne Combats (rugged style), but the ones in the image seem taller.

Cheers

Shoes for lean type people

I have several pairs of shoes which give wrinkles on the top of my feet since my feet are lean, not fat. Is there a way to fix it except for wearing several pairs of socks at the same time to make my foot higher?

Shoes I buy are mostly fine in terms of width but too high in terms of height.

They're all on sale today for $85 (regularly $155). I have never purchased one and am clueless as to the quality but it could be a good deal for a made in the USA, Brooks alternative.

My mission to go bespoke

I decided recently that I have had it with searching for hours (even days) through OTR choices, often to come away empty-handed, and if I do find something, it often has to be tailored and often comes from a sweat shop in China, regardless of the brand or price. Usually I know what I want but can't find it. Having bespoke clothing made only crossed my mind recently because I am currently in a cheap labour country, so I looked into the options and was pleasantly surprised at the prices - most bespoke options here are the same or sometimes much cheaper than OTR branded goods. From a price and fit point of view, there is no contest. However... the main problem seems to be finding the right fabrics. I'm not talking about the typical collection of dress shirt fabrics from Thomas Mason, for example, but more interesting choices for smart casual shirts. Can't find them anywhere!

So, I am starting with two dress shirts, which are being made right now at two different tailors which I wanted to try out. Both shirts using high end fabric (Thomas Mason and Albini). One will be $100, and the other $150. Should have them both in a few weeks.

I am also making 2 belts. I have bought solid titanium buckles which I like, and will soon go to a leather supplier to pick out the brown and black leather which I need, then go to a local leather worker who I already found to put it all together for $20.

I looked into bespoke shoes but there are simply no good options in this country, and as a shoemaker needs several visits from the customer, an overseas maker seems impractical. I will have to stick to OTR, though I have learned quite a bit about shoes recently from this forum and other and will stick to proper GY constructed shoes made in England (or possibly Europe).

Next on the list is a suit, but one step at a time. I am learning that this is fun and can achieve better results for less money, but it is certainly not a fast process!

6'8 in Toronto - Advice Requested

mardi 27 octobre 2015

Does anyone have any advice about affordable suit options for a 6'8 male (~210 pounds) in Toronto? Is 42/43 extra long off the rack and altered feasible? Or is MTM the better choice? And who carries extra long in the city, if anyone? I'm not in the market for thousand dollar suits, but something of moderate quality for $500-600 would be nice. Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

Is there any chance of getting a decent pair of bluchers or derbies for $150 USD?

I was pretty excited to snag the Varno 2.0 from AE's website when they were on deep discount, but the right shoe was incredibly uncomfortable, to the point where it rubbed the ankle bone raw whenever I tried to walk in it.

I can't really afford to buy anything more than $150USD, because the Canadian dollar is ****.

Any ideas on where to look? I was debating buying something from the second's inventory, but I'm wary about it. Seems very hit/miss reading the opinions on AAAC and reddit and styleforum.

Dinner jacket accouterments suggestions needed

Hello all,

First post in the forums, though I've been lurking and enjoying the posts for a while now.

I recently picked up the Jos. A. Bank peak lapel tuxedo as it seemed to be one of the few that has the correct dinner jacket details. It has grosgrain lapels so consequently I need to acquire a matching bow tie and cummerbund or backless semi-formal vest.

Any suggestions for reasonably priced options? Suggestions for a shirt are welcome also. Thanks in advance!

Winning the "Crease Lottery" with new shoes - how can I increase my chances?

I know shoes will crease no matter what I do and that does not necessarily detract from the aesthetics of a good shoe, but what can I do to increase the likelihood that the creases will form in the right places? (assuming that I am wearing the proper fit in the first place).

I have a new pair, for instance, where the left shoe is forming a crease right along the cap toe where it should be, but the right shoe decided to form a hard crease right through the middle of the vamp within the first 2 minutes of walking.

The stiffness of the leather of brand new shoes causes it to bend in unnatural ways in the beginning. I took a pen and rolled it along the vamp and tried to encourage the shoe to crease at the captoe. I also put a couple business cards on my foot under the vamp to suppress the hard creasing there, but I don't know if that's only making it worse.

I'm just waiting until the leather gets soft enough to bend naturally and stop putting pressure on these unnatural crease points. But I'm new at this and don't really know what I am doing.

Are there crease whisperers out there who can help me master the art of breaking in a new pair of shoes?

Is it worth tailoring a cheap suit?

Hello all

I posted recently about restarting my wardrobe, and I bought a couple of Fitzgerald suits at BB and also a cheap medium gray "Lauren" Ralph Lauren suit. The Lauren suit is obviously of a much lesser quality than the others but it's not entirely tragic. I paid 100 dollars for it and the pants are just a smidge too long and the jacket could be taken in just a bit. Is it worth it? Or is it understood that cheap suits don't deserve any tailoring?

Separate question, I am going to back to BB to get two more suits this Friday. Maybe the thinner Milano cut this time around. Do they have a sale around November? I would hate to think that I could have gotten a third suit if I just waited a week or so.

Thanks!

Thoughts on Wedding Attire...

Hello all first post.

Quick facts: Wedding in May 2016, fiancee will be wearing Champagne, black tie optional.

I'm a risky dresser, but it usually always works out well as I receive compliments from friends, family, and complete strangers often. I've never been afraid to go against the grain while using colors/patterns.

I'm likely going to go with the below burgundy tuxedo with black pants, while my groomsmen will be in traditional black. My logic is that colors like red have a more professional/formal side, which is burgundy or merlot. The same logic is used for blue, navy being the more professional/formal blue. While some traditional styles/colors I agree with, I think we live in a box at times.

I'd like to hear your opinions with logic on the wedding attire below.

What to Do After Soup Stains Fine Wool Sweater?

I need to work on my "how to eat noodle soup without splattering" skills--but in the meantime I stained a brand new fine merino v-neck sweater last night. As soup was mostly liquid, once it dried the stain was no longer visible.
But to ensure a long-life for my sweater, I'm wondering what the best procedure to follow is right after an incident like that.
- Do I rush the sweater to a dry cleaner at quickly as possible?
- Blot the (now invisible) stain with warm water and hope for the best?
- Hand wash entire sweater?

Any advice appreciated,

Jon

MTM Morning Suit

My sister is getting married in spring, and I'll need to wear morning dress. I have been looking out for a morning coat, and I'm relatively confident that I'll find one. However, the waistcoat and trousers are proving more difficult.

Can anybody recommend a MTM tailor that can make a proper waistcoat and trousers for morning dress?

In praise of the waistcoat (and advice needed)

I try to express this as well as I can with my limited English capacities: I really like waistcoats and I have become to include a waistcoat in my apparel at almost a daily basis (safe for hot weather). In fact, during the day in a overheated office I hang my jacket and I think that it looks better when wearing a waistcoat than just pants and shirt. It gives me that "Sonny Corleone", "man of action" look if you know what I mean. Fact is, that I have a rather skinny build but relatively broad shoulders. That being said I have to stay clear of slim fit shirts and if I wear a shirt that is comfortable around the chest it gets rather floppy around my waist. The waistcoat adresses that problem nicely.

The problem is, even if waistcoats became somewhat fashionable lately they remain elusive and hard to come by. Especially since the possibilities for combinations with pants and odd jackets require a large collection of items of different fabrics and colours if you want to add some variation in your wardrobe. Also it appears important do rotate them often being a garment that is worn close to the body. The same is true for three piece suits that still are hard to find where I live.

Also, I need some inspiration for different combinations. Up to now I own solid dark brown, brown linen, sky blue, rusty red tweed, light grey, and two variations of checked flanell in grey earthy and brown tones. All rather conservative. Nothing too flashy or colourful (I think one has to avoid looking like a clown) and no black (I don't want to look like an undertaker either).

Does anyone know online retailers that offer a vide variations of waistcoats and would you care to share some advices for nice combinations (perhaps with pics)?

Thanks a lot!

Double Monk recommendations

I have a friend that is looking for some black double monks. His price range is >400.00

I've shown him Carmina through Skoak which is just above his price range, but is the one I tried to steer him towards, and I've shown him AE's Mora 2.0 through shoebank which is well within his price range, I've also shown him some stuff that is way over his price range, and for me that's the problem at sub 400.00 AE is the only thing I can think of. Carmina would have been perfect last month, and I also think that of all of the double monks I've seen Carmina, has the one on the nicest last.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Linen shirts, sizing, shrinkage, expansion

I bought a few linen shirts from Spier & Mackay. I bought all my OTR shirts from them because they fit decently well and they are well made for its price due to the strong USD and weak Canadian dollar.

The linen shirts, they fit okay out of the box (little bigger than the cotton shirts). However, when I washed (hot water) and ironed them, the material expanded or something. The shirts are all huge now. So big that they are unwearable. The shirt cuff and sleeve just cover my entire hand because it expanded so much. A week later, I washed and machine dried them and they fit a lot better (pretty much same size out of the box). I'm wearing one right now and I like it, but it's very wrinkled. I rather have it slightly less wrinkled because I don't want to look unkempt.

When you iron linen, is it supposed to expand?

A Question on Hangers / Suit Hanging

Hello all

I have a couple of quick question about hangers and suit hanging.

It is my understanding that, for obvious reasons, sturdy wooden hangers with broad shoulder support is preferable for suit jackets.

But what is everyone's preference for trousers?

First of all, do you hang your suit trousers on the same hanger as your suit, on the trouser bar? I generally avoid doing this, and hang them separately. I guess it's good form to allow the garments to air out/drape independently? But as my suit collection grows, my storage space diminishes, meaning I might have to start hanging together.

Secondly, what is your preference for trouser hanger type? I know hanging them completely upside down using a clamp type hanger is ideal, to allow creases to fall out, and I do this with trousers straight after wear. However my wardrobe cannot accommodate this type of hanging, and so once it is stored it is folded on a hanger.

Suit hangers usually come with two types of trouser bar: velvet and non-slip. What is everyone's preference? I have these non-slip type at the moment:

But am thinking of switching to the rounded velvet type:

I like to use velvet when hanging trousers independently, but my wooden jacket hangers have the non-slip toothy type.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Pure merino vs merino blend for socks

I would say that pure merino socks would be better for moisture-wicking performance; but a wool blend -- let's say: 80% merino, 20% synthetic fiber -- would fit more snugly and would be more resistant to friction, hence lasting longer. What do you think?

How an Equus Belt is Made

Hi Guys,

I havent posted here often enough recently, my apologies for my absence!

Andy posted a link to our last video, we have just released the next one in the series, documenting how our Lined and Raised belts are made. I know there are quite a number worn by members here so this will be of interest to them but we really are trying to document the craft we work in, to keep truly handmade work relevant commercially and socially for the future. I hope you like it!

Cashmere vs wool: which creates less static electricity?

winter is coming and the dry air always leads to static electricity and a fear of touching door knobs and handles. I think I have it worse than many others in the office. I mostly have thick cotton sweaters, and a few thin merino wool ones which i don't wear as often because I feel it would lead to more shocks. How about cashmere? i don't own any, but is it better than wool in that regard?

Bags and Suits - Do they need to match

Gentlemen,

I have a job interview in a few weeks and am starting to get my everything sorted for it. I already have a navy suit from Suit Supply and ties, cuff links, shirt and as part of my ensemble I am using a pair of black leather shoes that I already own. I have come to realise that I am in need of a bag/ briefcase for my interview as I currently only have a slightly worse for wear burgundy backpack that I use for university. Being a student I'm looking for value for money when it comes to bags and i have been pointed in the direction of Kattee and this messenger bag in Beige as it will also work well for my studies. My query is: does a bag leather have to match that of the rest of the outfit (would it be okay to use this brown bag with black shoes) and are there any alternative brands that you know about that i can use for both an interview and a more casual university setting? I live in the UK btw, so unless there is free shipping, US companies may not be applicable here.

Thanks for any advice you may have

Rules about Pocket Watch Chain

I like how people are dressed in classical styles with pocket watch chains on their vests. My question is whether it is acceptable to wear a chain without a watch. Since I always wear a wrist watch, it seems awkward to me to wear two watches at the same time. I appreciate any comments.

How to wear these boots without a matching belt?

A number of months back I purchased these rather nice suede Loake chukkas. I've only worn them a handful of times as I'm mindful I don't have a matching belt to suit. I think the official colour is 'berry'.

I've worn them with a brown belt and burgundy trousers as I felt the similarly coloured trousers lessened the unmatched effect.

What's the best way to get more wear out of these without having to actively buy a matching belt? Is a darker brown 'close enough' (though I appreciate it's difficult to comment on that without seeing the belt in question). I don't think there is enough detail highlighting on the boot to go for a similarly coloured belt.

I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Barbour Liddesdale "heritage" model

samedi 24 octobre 2015

Brethren, I was curious (and have done prior research) what's the difference between the Liddesdale heritage and regular one?

The material of the Liddesdale from what I've read is polyester. How's the quality and last of the product?

knee high boot options

My wife is looking for a boot and I am only knowledgable about boot for men. What are some of the quality boots for women? She is looking for a non-high heel, knee high boot without laces. I believe she wants to be able to pull it on and she wants the boot to be somewhat tight so lack of laces or a zipper would still allow it to stay put. she would like to stay away from the types of boots that bunch up and are loose. Is there anything out there that encompasses all those qualities or will she have to be open to other ideas to obtain the look she is going for? Thanks all.

Barbour waxed jacket / coat for women?

My wife has been looking for a utilitarian type waxed cotton coat. When I was looking for the same thing a few years ago I came across a Border made in the UK for a good price on the bay. I kind of got lucky.

Has anyone shopped for a ladies Barbour recently? Any good sites for cheaper last year's models? Any suggestions for models that are flattering for women? Made in England would be a big plus.

It is Barbour weather here in Maryland; plenty of drizzle and muck. I can't blame her for being jealous when I don my musty Border with it's luxurious drape and classic details.

Six pairs of Land's End Chinos - Six different fits 😧

I recently purchased six pairs of Land's Chinos, all Tailored Fit, Flat Front. Every single pair of the pants fit differently. From 'darn I wish these were not falling down' to 'I can't breath'. Remarkably, they all fit my thin legs and butt pretty much the same with no notice of difference. I'm finding after wasting a bunch of money that the LE Tailored Fit have the rise and leg slimness I need. However, I'm struggling with the variation in waist size. Has anybody else experienced this?

Clothes (shoes) indeed do make the man..

I have 2 new BB tweed jackets that I was looking to find some ties for. I went over to my local BB outlet to see if they had any Makers ties mixed in, bringing the coats with me.

i usually avoid the SAS here as they are not very knowledgable. A young man who was well put together came over to help me. It soon became apparent that he had a knowledge of colors, textures, and patterns. To my delight, I was for the first time talking to a SA who spoke my language, and was helpful.

He then turned to me and asked if I posted on AAAC. When I replied yes, he introduced himself. Imagine my shock that it was YRR. I asked him how he knew I was an AAAC member. He pointed down and said that when he saw the bal boots he thought to himself "This is a guy who knows what he's doing".

We had a plesant time together pairing shirts ties and PS. From expecting to go home empty handed, I left with 3 Ancient Madders, a silk knit, and 3 PS. All for under $200.

I admit to being embarrassed at not recognizing him immediately from his WAYWT threads, but who would expect to randomly run into a fellow member? I wonder if any of his compatriots are as attuned to their customer's dress?

Where's the best place to buy men's jewellery?

Hey, I'm looking to buy my other half a piece of jewellery for Christmas but I'm not sure where is best to go for this. I'm thinking either a nice sterling silver bangle or some cufflinks (or if budget will allow, both!). I've found an online shop called Alfred & Co. (www.AlfredCo.com) which sells a lot of cufflinks and has some men's silver bangles too. Has anyone bought from here before? Can anyone suggest any places to go for men's jewellery?

Thanks

MTM dress shirt sweetspot

Hi. This is my first post. I've been lurking on the forums, but can't quite find a thread that throughly covers this topic. I'll present what information I think I've gathered below. Please correct and inform. If there is an exiting thread that covers this, please point me in the right direction.

I need to build up a wardrobe from scratch, since I recently lost 50 pounds. I'm looking to build a capsule wardrobe with the basis being the white dress shirt. Something I can dress up or down. I don't mind spending money for value, but I seem to get queasy when thinking about paying more than $100 for a dress shirt, so I'll need some education to get past that. (since I can get $400 Allen Edmonds shoes on eBay for ~$100, high quality selvage jeans on eBay for $40-50, etc. I have some mental barrier with the cost of dress shirts)

I'm really trying to find the sweet spot in price vs quality. Not sure if my measurements are good for off the rack, since my neck is kinda in between at 15.75, arms are shortish 33 (sleeve length 24.5), chest 40 and 34 waist. I like the shirts to be very slim fitting; hugging the body, since I'm 5'9" 160 pounds, but not tight. So MTM seems to be the way to go, plus I hate trying on clothes.

It seems like the spectrum for MTM shirts is $60 on the low end (Indochino,Tailor4Less) up to $160-$200 for the midrange? (ProperCloth, MyTailor), to Turnbull an Asser on the high end. (what did I miss in between the $60 and $200 range? are there more price points I'm missing? Something around $120, $130 perhaps?)

I thought this article here was quite informative:
http://ift.tt/1k5rro8

From what I've read so far it seems like ProperCloth or MyTailor would hit the sweet spot for price vs quality and allow me to get a few shirts with high end cloth (Thomas Mason) down the road when funds permit. I could by cheaper quality cloth shirts from them until I get the fit down then upgrade the cloth. Does this seem like a good strategy?

On some of the sites it seems difficult to get solid information on the thread count, button quality, button stitch type, etc. which makes MTM seem like fine way to waste alot of money up front if you do it wrong vs just buying OTR.

So, here I am looking for advice. I want to understand the different quality (price) tiers, and the best way to go from buying some cheap shirts to get the fit right, to getting the best value cloth down the road to put some staples into my wardrobe. Not looking for anything fancy, just well fitting, with high quality material that will last. I'm looking for the sweet spot in cost per month/year of wear.

What I'm achieve is that price point where I can get 80-90% of what the high end shirts offer at the lowest pricepoint. Think the BWM M3 or Corvette of shirts. Where you can get the majority of the quality and performance without starting to spend silly money.

Thanks in advance for the help, and point me in the right direction.

LL Bean chamois shirt rant

I've always worn and always been a fan of LL Bean's flannel shirts- for my money, you can't beat the feel and the warmth of the fabric or the classic patterns. So at the end of last winter (February-ish), I decided to branch out and purchase my first chamois shirt from them- this beautiful apple cinnamon plaid that screams "fall":

the shirt is amazing. I was advised prior to ordering the shirt to order a size down (because the shirt was a bit larger) so I ordered a small. The fit is great- slightly bulky (so I wear it as a light jacket), with ample sleeve length (which was my primary concern with ordering a small). All in all, probably my favorite fall/winter shirt.

fast forward to today. With cooler weather approaching, I decided that I wanted to get a couple solid chamois shirts (navy and green specifically). Since my first one is a small, I ordered a small for this as well. Long story short, here is the new one on top of the old one:

both size small, both traditional fit, the new one with sleeves about 2" shorter and attached at a clearly different pitch (I think that's the term). Since the sleeves were too short to be useable, I reordered a medium in the same shirt- the same size I wear for their scotch plaid flannel shirts. Results:

Besides the body being longer and wider (which was expected), the sleeves are STILL an inch shorter on the medium than my older small.

I had always heard to size down on the chamois, and that worked amazingly well on my first shirt, but unfortunately- as much as I like the material- it doesn't appear as though I'll be able to wear these. I do wonder if my first shirt was the inconsistent one- if so, it worked in my favor, but I wish I could replicate it.
