Stiff chukka boots

lundi 31 août 2015

I just purchased my first pair of chukkas, Loakes Pimlico in calf, and the shafts are very stiff and hurt my ankles quite a bit. Is this to be expected and can I do something to soften them up?

Thanks in advance

Moleskin five Pockets

i did a cursory search, and only turned up old or broken links..
I'm on the search for some 5pocket mole skins for the autumn, however I'm not trying to spend over $100 on them (I'm getting very thrifty in my old age haha).
I'm hoping that one or more of you esteemed gentlemen may be able to point me in the direction of my quarry.

New Lands End Catalog

The new Lands End Men's Catalog came in today's mail and for the first time in years there are things that I would actually wear and maybe even purchase. The sport jackets and ties are really nice. There are some great shirt patterns but it looks like they still have the short collar issue.

Cradle To Grave - Another British TV show that maybe worth a look

As you may know, my wife works a post production supervisor in the television business, so although we don't have a TV ourselves, I am often caught watching clips, and sometimes entire episodes of various shows she may be working on.

Of course, some are awful, and some should never have seen the light of day, (Pompidou being the most notorious example, which the BBC will try to brush under the carpet), but sometimes there is a show worth watching.
Cradle To Grave is one of these.
Eight half hour episodes of comedy/drama set in working class South London of the mid 1970's.
Based on the teenage years of London DJ and radio broadcaster Danny Baker, the stories are funny and the performances are good. And, although the 70's are not that long ago, it really is another world, in a London prior to "cultural enrichment".

There is a very small clothing related angle too, at a time when teenage boys actually cared about what they wore and getting the latest style of trousers was most important.

The show airs next Thursday, Sept 3rd, on BBC2 I think, although it was made by ITV for the BBC, which is very odd.
I'm sure it'll be available online in the future too.

Alterations/Tailoring feedback needed - Brooks Brothers Indianapolis/Cincinnati

Guys,

For any of you in the Indy or Cincinnati area, what is your opinion of the Keystone (or Kenwood) Brooks Brother's suit fitting/tailoring abilities?

I'm going to be replacing a couple suits in a few weeks and am trying to get some feedback as I know poor alterations can make the most expensive suit look terrible. Previously, I've always purchased my suits from Nordstom (Indy) and have been quite happy. But I'm trying to figure out what my 'best' option is going to be.

Since I live pretty much halfway between Indy and Cincinnati, both stores are viable options for me.

I always used to consider Brooks Brother's as an 'old folks' store (no offense to anyone). However, after finding several clothing items from there that I really like and fit like a glove off the rack I've decided that I like their stuff.

I just started looking at their suits this weekend and really like a couple of them. However, having never purchased anything tailored or fitted by either store, I'm a little reluctant to drop that kind of money without having a good idea what to expect plus the handful of reviews on Yelp weren't too encouraging.

Does anyone have any feedback (both positive and negative) on either store to share?

Looking for a new winter coat (possibly a peacoat)

With fall and winter approaching, I'd like to invest in a quality peacoat. Also, given the fact that I just lost about 70lbs I'd like to have something that actually fits :tongue2:

I'm looking for something authentic and traditional in styling and have been looking at the Sterlingwear of Boston Authentic and Navigator styles (http://ift.tt/1KnuPbK). I'm leaning towards the Navigator simply because I'm not a fan of nylon.

I'm also stuck between the navy and black. I still can't decide. Since this is going to be my go-to everyday coat I need it to go with pretty much anything.

Thoughts? Or, is there elsewhere I should be looking instead.

Does anyone on here have any experience with either of these two particular coats? (especially their sizing). Any assistance would be most appreciated.

I've found a dark midnight blue suit. Is it too dark for business?

dimanche 30 août 2015

Hello,
So I'd like to buy my first suit with the main idea of using it in a business setting when needed. I was aiming for something blue/black and i found the suit pictured in the pic which fits my big shoulders and is kind of a bargain.
Is this suit too black for business setting? Can i only wear it with black shoes? (i like oxblood/brown)

(the lighting is a bit on the low side, you can see what real black is like on the suit's price-label)

PSA - Bills Khakis seriously on sale @ STP & billskhakis.com

For those who like Bills but balk at the price...

Sierra Trading Post now has Bills Original Twills on sale for $52.46, minus your discount of the day. For me right now that would be an additional 30% off at $36.72, with no-minimum 99 cent shipping.

They have other models too, as they always do. But the Original Twills are almost never on sale, so this may be a real coup.

But before you go hog wild on the other Bills at STP, check out billskhakis.com, which has a sale like I've never seen on shorts, Parker pants, and shirts. $30 or even less for some of the shorts, plenty of shirts under $40, and all kinds of other stuff.

Allen Edmonds Belgium?

I'm looking at some potential adds to my shoe collection and would welcome some input. I already have 3 pair of Burgundy/Merlot shoes:

1) A double-soled longwing blucher (Stuart McGuire gunboats)
2) A penny loafer (AE Walden)
3) A tassel loafer (AE Astor)

I've run across a pair of Allen Edmonds "Belgiums" online for sale. I know this is a discontinued model and I'm wondering of anyone has experience with it. One of my concerns is that when I do an image search, all the photos of she tend to be very beat up and mis-shapen. That leads me to believe that perhaps the shoe doesn't wear very well.

Here is the for-sale pic. I'm interested in any feedback

All you could want to know, and so much more! ;)

(Sorry, can't resist silliness.)

Really well done, and informative.

"Part one reviews 33 houses from across the globe, producing quality shoes ranging in price from $180 to $640. Part two, which will be published later this month after carefully curating and finalizing the selection, will cover brands priced $680 and upwards. Together, the complete review will analyze a total of 59 brands, with prices ranging from $180 to $1800."

Time of year to avoid wearing this taupe sport jacket?

I recently purchased 2 new sportcoats from Men's Wearhouse because I'm trying to dress nicer at work. One is charcoal with light plaid pattern that I assume I can wear year round for work. The other is a taupe plaid that I'm told is for spring/summer only. I am still learning things about men's fashion that perhaps I should know, but don't.

How do I know when the seasons have changed such that I stop wearing the taupe coat? I live in Virginia. Is Labor Day a good guide to stop wearing the taupe jacket as it is for avoiding very light pants? I will only be wearing for business casual wear, possibly just entering/leaving the building and maybe once a quarter to an offsite manager's retreat.

Fox Hunt Style Boots

Everytime I leave something in my shopping cart on Ralph Lauren's website, they send the same email with the following photo.

"We've kept your shoping bag safe" they say, but I know they're just pulling on my wallet strings. Especialy with those boots.. I'm on Uncle Ralph's website a few times every month, adding and dropping things from my cart, so over time those have boots made quite an impression on me. I wanted and needed them. And then I finally found them on eBay. Won the auction fair and square. Then the seller backed out because they didn't get bid up enough. I can't tell you how mad I was, especially not having any way to push his hand. You can't force a seller to send you something, and so I let it go and moved on.

Or so I thought. The seller relists them every week, and there they are. Taunting me with their distinctive fox hunt style. One day boots, you will be mine. I might make an offer this afternoon.. Or I might just try to get over them.

Navy socks with black shoes?

Ok, y'all, I'm attending a wedding tomorrow with my girlfriend. I'm wearing a light gray suit and a navy Chipp grenadine tie (her dress will be navy, so she wants us to match). I'd like to wear navy socks to match my tie; however, I'd most likely be wearing black shoes. I have brown / caramel dress shoes too, and of course, I could wear navy socks with them, but I feel as though black shoes would go even better with light gray. But if I wore black shoes, would it be wrong to wear navy socks? Thanks in advance.

Help! I'm afraid of moths.

I have a rather extensive suits and separates collection (30+ and growing) and the fear is growing of that scourge to the well dressed gent. I speak none other than that of the dreaded moth. It's friend the silverfish doesn't seem to be an issue where I live.

Moth balls are horrible and make your suits smell of camphor, which no proper gentleman should be caught carrying the odor of. I've piled the closets deep with cedar moth repellent, I have no objection to the woodsy smell. The efficacy of cedar repellent however, seems to vary greatly and more or less on opinion rather than scientific result.

As of yet, I don't have a butler, let alone a second footman to rotate, inspect and press them regularly, so what is a well dressed gent to do when left to his own devices?

looking for: comfortable but stylish leather brogue or saddle shoes with rubber sole for variable weather

Dear Forum,

I am very happy with my Allen Edmonds leather soled shoes for sunny days in the city. However now I am looking for either brogues or saddle shoes that are a bit more versatile, thus I was thinking of getting a rubber sole (not sure which type?) for variable weather conditions and they should be soft and sturdy enough for longer walks not only in city terrain but also light "off-road" wear, e.g. countryside walks. I am looking for a shoe that is classy, sturdy and comfortable. Any suggestions? Budget would be around 150-300$...

Thanks!!!

LL Bean pathfinder chinos..... $29.99 standard fit

It looks like I might have to get the bottoms cuffed. Here I've rolled them up myself, but I will need to see a professional tailor about this if I'm to get it right.

I'm primarily concerned about fit right now. I'm a skinny guy on the slim side, so do these look too big / baggy for my frame? Do I have to put them in the closet for a bit while I eat and bulk up? Or are they fine and I should go ahead and step into public. My sisters think it's a bit big.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated

Biography of Coco Chanel

I wonder if anyone's read the book reviewed here: http://ift.tt/1UhQoKp. The reviewer writes, "The War changed women's attitudes toward clothing. Proust has one of his characters [I don't know which one; I've never gotten that far -- TN] say that it's no longer a matter of parading around in a dress made by a great couturier, but rather of obtaining 'charming results in the realm of fashion, without ill-considered and unseemly luxury..." Apparently this new biography is unsparing about the degree of Chanel's collaboration.

Help My Indecisiveness

I love me some BB tartan in the winter time. I know the below tartan cardigan is not extremely versatile, but is it versatile enough to justify wearing outside of December and a week or two after Christmas? I don't have any cardigans and would like something I can wear semi-regularly around the office when it's cold, but I live in Michigan where it's cold October - March and I fear I will feel silly wearing a "Christmas sweater" outside of around Christmas. Heck, it's been nearly cold enough for a cardigan today and yesterday!

Should I bypass this despite the low price and wait out for a more neutral one? Or, is this cardigan dapper enough to justify at 75 bucks? Thanks!

How do people here like Spirit of Shetland sweaters?

They seem great: one can choose one's yarn/color AND get it made to your size specs.

The only downside is a wait but it seems worth it.

I presume the quality is very high?

Are these fairly substantial/thick and somewhat rough in the hand?

I see they are seamless - do peeps like that?

Any complaints? General comments? How long do they normally take from order to your door?

A question of grave importance

Have you ever said, " I wouldn't be caught dead in the same suit two days in a row"?

Having recently made funeral arrangements for my son. This experience has gotten me to thinking about pre-arranging my own funeral which ties into the question above.

It is common in our family to have a visitation / viewing the evening before the funeral service with another viewing before the funeral service the following day. If one can't stand the thought of being seen in the same suit two days in a row, what is one to do?

1. Ask the funeral director to change the deceased clothes between viewings.

2. Skip the suit and go with a fishing vest and chest waders.

3. Other options?

Which brand should I buy my Polo shirts from?

Hi all,

I'm trying to find some quality polo shirts to buy, nothing over 100/polo please. The things I'm looking for in a polo shirt is something that won't lose color, something that holds up well and holds its shape after multiple washes.

Which brands would you recommend? I've heard some things about Brooks brothers, Lands' End, Vineyard Vines, Polo Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, etc.

Which of these, in terms of previous experience, lasts the most washes without visible deteriorations?

Thanks!

Best 'wash' for cashmere these days? Am I doing it all wrong?

Greetings everyone...

I've always been told to hand wash cashmere in cold water with a cap of good old fashioned Woolite and it will last pretty much forever.

Recently I was having a discussion with a co-worker and was 'informed' that long-term Classic-style Woolite would damage cashmere and that I shouldn't still be using the stuff. Instead I'm supposed to apparently use either the new Woolite for Darks stuff or something called Laundress.

I'm now officially confused...

I always thought the Woolite Darks was for jeans, black, dark blue, etc... You know - 'darks'. I've never heard of this Laundress stuff she was talking about.

I'd like to think that she's mis-informed, but since her sweaters always look fantastic and new I figured that I'd check with the experts here... Have any of you heard of this? I was always under the impression that old fashioned Woolite was about the safest thing you could use on any fabric.

Any information would be most helpful... As expensive as those things are I definitely don't want to do anything to hurt my collection. Advice?

New Allen Edmonds Cornwallis / 1943 LAST

Ok, I am in love with the way the Cornwallis looks. I have 4 pair of AE's all built on the 5 LAST. My question is does anybody have experience with the new 1943 LAST or the 333 LAST...I believe the 1943 is similar to the 333. How does it fit compared to the 5 LAST? Would you go down 1/2 size? I know the best way to handle this is to get measured but I don't have an AE retail store anywhere close to me.

Thanks.

Prescription eyeglasses

On my 29th birthday I blew out my back for about a week, from picking up my son, and here I am less than a month away from my 30th, and I'm having the exact same back problem, but I also just got handed a prescription for my first pair of eyeglasses. Nobody told me getting older happened that quickly.

So here is the dilemma I have never had to wear eyeglasses, I know I need something that will flatter my round face. Does that mean going for a round frame, or something more angular? Brand suggestions?
I tried on some brooks brothers almost octagonal shaped, and I like that. I also tried on some tortoise shell club masters and I like those as well.

BB Blazer Question?

Just wondering,

I was planning on buying a Brooks Brothers blazer pretty soon and I was wondering which would be better to get the standard BB blazer(which is a Fitzgerald fit) or a Country Club Saxxon?

Fitizgerald Fit blazer

Country Club Saxxon blazer

From what I've heard the Country Club one is full canvassed? Is this true? Personally I like the look and style of the Fitizgerald one better.

Also on a point of ettiqute. This is the first time I've really bought anything from a main line store like this. A week and a half or so earlier I went in and tried on a couple of these blazers with one of the salesman. However, he is not in for the next couple of days. Would it be wrong to go in and buy from another guy there instead of him? If so I might just wait until he is back in.

Thank you again,

UK gun laws: What if Shaver wants to arm up?

I ask this not to start a fight about gun control but to obtain information. Would those of you on the other side of the pond care to enlighten me as to how UK gun laws work? What if our beloved Shaver turned survivalist or decided he had finally had enough with, I don't know, Simon Cowell. So he decides to buy a Glock 19. What must Shaver do? What's the process? How long would it take him?

I'm kidding about Shaver of course, but seriously, how hard or easy is it for you to go buy a Glock over in Blighty?

You do not exist.

The concept of the Ancestor Programme, more recently the Simulation Hypothesis, provides us with the knowledge that it is statistically near impossible that we exist in an authentic reality and almost certain that we are mere avatars in some xbox game.

Variants of the Simulation Hypothesis expounding the notion that this is not the true creation may be traced back to many ancient primitive cultures across the globe. Early philosophical crystallisation was offered by Pyrrhon of Ellis "sense experience and beliefs .. are in fact neither true nor false”. Sextus Empiricus developed the concept further “one may be either in a state of wakefulness or sleep. But it is entirely possible that things in the world really are exactly as they appear to be to those in unnatural states”. The Zen Buddhists involved themselves in the concerns of existence (but they are, of course, fools and so I choose to disregard them). Master Zhuang’s traditional fable proposes “While he is dreaming he does not know it is a dream, and in his dream he may even try to interpret a dream”. René Descartes allowed “The ability of the mind to be tricked into believing a mentally generated world is the "real world" means at least one variety of simulated reality is a common, even nightly event”. Lewis Caroll’s Red King dreams within the Looking Glass pages and should he wake……

Here is the inarguable logic:

Computing power has increased exponentially since the fifties (the advent of the modern computer age) and shows no sign of slowing, more likely it will accelerate - with petascale performance level data access and manipulation via cloud storage imminent.

Video games, empowered by the improvements to processing, have followed the trend of exponential advancement from Ping to the latest COD, ultra-realistic, smooth flowing graphics and populated by characters powered by AI capable of independent ‘off screen’ activity.

Eventually it will be possible to simulate the entire Solar System, even the Universe, especially if a conceit entitled ‘passing through the veil’ is employed, by which characters would be programmed to disregard perceptual flaws. However, the flaws could be probed and current lattice-gauge theory explores the possibility that our space-time is composed of discrete tiling, as might be expected in virtual simulation.

Once a video game of Universal simulation is made commercially available then the statistical likelihood of us existing in the authentic reality drops to almost zero – if there a millions of simulations then only one can be truly real, the odds against it being our own experience which is authentic are millions to one against. Worse still, unless one discounts entirely the possibility of Universal simulations being achievable then we must be existing within a simulation currently. As Nick Bostrom has it “Unless we are now living in a simulation, our descendants will almost certainly never run an ancestor-simulation”.

Dry clean only chinos?

Yesterday I thrifted a pair of Ralph Lauren Polo white chinos, which are unhemmed and therefore I assumed unworn.
A bit too white for me, but I got them to flip.
When home and out in the daylight I found a few stains by the left pocket, and have now looked at the label to find these chinos are not to be washed, bleached or ironed.
Professional dry clean only.
Is this a bit excessive on 100% cotton trousers?
Would I ruin them by a low temp wash and an iron?

Which pock square?

Navy blazer, tan linen pants white shirt, med brown split toe loafers. I'm leaning towards the white with blue border, or does the paisley clash with what's going on with the tie? Or does the tie not work for you guys at all? Any other suggestions will be appreciated.

Fountain Pens

I'm in the market for a new fountain pen I currently use a S.T Dupont in style which from my searching is no longer produced. I also use Pilot disposable fountains pens for work. I'm after a pen with a fine nib the Dupont is good to use but I just would like a finer line when I write.

Also any recommendations for a brand of note book which has paper that doesn't bleed?

I came across this article by accident but I found it very useful. Rule #4 was something I also figured out from observation and matching it with the color wheel. It may be too bold for some, but I still find it useful.

Just had a new tuxedo shirt made for my wedding, and the stud holes aren't like the button hole types I've had before. Do I need different studs? Or was the shirt made wrong? Can it be fixed?

AE sizing question

Hi guys,

So a few months ago I got my first pair of AE Clark Streets, then got a second pair of the Clark Streets from the shoe bank cause I loved them so much, Now I want to get a pair of the Park Avenue from the shoe bank, my question is the Clark Streets I got in a 10 EEE and after wearing them for a longer time now, I feel they are a tad bit too wide. Do the park avenue's generally run narrower or wider or about the same? Has anyone had experience with both? I see I can get a 10 EE on the park avenues and was thinking about giving that a try cause I don't want them to be too loose. The clark streets I can just feel room in the toe box and do have to tighten the lases fairly good. But overall they fit ok, just thinking an EE might suit me better.

Disappointed that they went with raglan instead of the traditional saddle shoulder. Probably because the factory they send more sweaters too mostly produces raglan sweater models for them?

Having trouble finding OTR trousers and shirts

Few things I'd like answered. Work is getting more casual, and moving to slacks, shirts and ties; with suits reserved for court and depositions. How many pairs of trousers and shirts are recommended for a basic 4 day rotation? I was thinking 4-5 of each

Measurements:
5'10" 210lbs
18" neck
48" chest
35" waist
26" thighs
17.5" arms

Current suits: BB 1818 Fitzgerald (44R), Zegna & Canali (46R/56EU). I always have to open the armholes on my suits due to my arms and shoulders size. The pants had been heavily tailored to fit; but BB Fitz are still too roomy and not really tapered, though I don't mind with a jacket.

Shirts:
My big neck and chest leave me with pretty huge OTR shirts. My arms also cause a problem with some shirts Eton and BB slim/extra slim are still too big and billowy.

I'm thinking that I'll just go to CEGO, as I work in NYC. If there are any other recommendations then I would appreciate it.

Trousers:
For trousers, I've tried zanella and pal zilera at my local nordstroms. I tried on 38" and they still were to tight on my butt/thigh that you could see my crotch clearly and the pockets were obviously being pulled too tight.

Other brands I've seen with good reviews are: incotex, howard yount, epaulet, PRL Made in Italy, maribex, and dapper classics.

The problem I have with most pant is that my butt and thighs are pretty big and it pulls the fabric so tight that it shows my bulge in the front. This has been an issue since I was like 15 years old, it's how my body is built as a sprinter and weightlifter.

TLDR:
1. OTR shirts are too billowy in my size. Planning on trying CEGO, but would welcome cheaper or other alternatives.

2. OTR trousers have always been an issue. I have a pair of 38" PRL Prestons I got for $90 NWT in the mail, so I'll post photos when they arrive. Are any brands (incotex, howard young, epaulet, maribex, dapper classic, or others) a viable options or should I go MTM with Epaulet. Any other MTM trousers are welcome as well. Also thinking I should consider pleats instead of flat front.

I'm not looking for painted on tight clothing, just tailored things that fit better than billowy.

Wearing polos and chinos when being honored by the French President...

Lapel Width, Shirt Collar Length, and Tie Width

So, I bought a new suit and it has a 3.5'' lapel and it looks good. However, I want bigger. The shoulders on my suit are 18'' (Though, I can wear between 18''-19'', depending on the shoulder padding). How big can the lapel width go without looking funny? I want to imitate this:

This is a B&Tailor suit. I believe that is Changwoo Jungyul, who is the son of head tailor at B&Tailor. My guess is that Changwoo is smaller than me, so I am not looking to copy his lapel width. Any guess on what size lapel I would need to get a similar effect?

To match the lapel? what length shirt collar should I get? All my shirts are now made by MyTailor and they are 3 3/8'', semi-spread.

How about tie width? I am 5'9'' 170lbs.

Button Down Collar AND Cufflinks

Anyone know of any modern manufacturers of buttondowns with either a standard cuff that uses links or even French cuffs ?

I remember when I was young, I had shirts that had a "convertible" cuff that could be buttoned or use links.

Safari Jackets.

I like and have always worn safari jackets, despite their silly name . . . . most, obviously, never intended to be so worn. (I'm sure there are other better names, though I can't lay my mind upon one at the moment.) It's clear I'm very fond of the genre, but that offers no reason why you should be also. However if you are, this is one of the nicer versions I've stumbled across lately. Though it's made of linen, and it's getting perhaps a little late in the season to contemplate such. Still, very nice to look at, and this one has all the right proportions and doo-dads. For any so disposed.

Suggestions for first custom shirt?

I'm tossing a well-worn dress shirt and would like to get a replacement. Historically I have purchased 'classic' fit shirts which have not fit me well as I have a slender frame. Now I'm buying 'tailored' fit shirts and my clothes look much better.

I've never purchased a custom shirt from somewhere online. Can you recommend a place? I'd like to keep the cost to $50 or less, maybe $75 for two :rolleyes2:. I'll be wearing it in a very casual 'business casual' environment, usually with a tie. I don't like a shiny poplin, but anything else (twill, pinpoint, herringbone) would be fine.

Thanks for an recs!

Changes to BB alteration services?

I was browsing the BB website this morning and noticed a couple of new (to me, at least), free alteration options:

  1. They now offer to take trousers in/let them out 1"
  2. Inseams can be finished in half-inch increments

Has anyone had the opportunity to try this yet?

Peter Christian sport coat quality?

mardi 25 août 2015

Hello all,

I "discovered" Peter Christian and was pleased to see positive reviews on this forum - specifically pants and shirts. I'm in the market for an action-back jacket (I admit, not for actually shooting, but for comfort and timeless style) and found a PC one in thornproof tweed that looks quite nice.

PC's customer service has provided dimensions, but never answered my question about whether the coat was partially or fully canvassed. Does anyone have experience with their jackets and/or know if they are canvassed or not?

Thanks in advance for any guidance.

Well, seems PRL chinos have all gone low rise with rather short front rise....what's a guy to do?

Been awhile since I've been around. Recently moved to Florida, gained 35 pounds due to motorcycle injury, and have outgrown my tried and true PRL "Philip" flat front and "Andrew" forward pleat pant tagged 38" but stretched to 39". Owned every color. Now that I am an actual 40" waist, I am having a difficult time finding PRL cotton chinos that are comfortable. As I have a bit of a tire around my waist, the low rise of the Preston pant isn't bad, it's just there is no room for the "boys" to move around freely. And the Florida heat doesn't help.

The Philip pant had a very long front and rear rise.I had a good two inches below my "boys", but they weren't for going out, just running errands and lounging around. Now everything I find, both on eBay and on the PRL site seems to be slim cut, with a low waist, and very short rise, both front and rear.

Does anyone know of a model chino made by PRL blue label that offers a longer rise? Rather stay flat front, but would go pleat if push came to shove. Older offerings are fine as good buys can be had on eBay. Saw the Ethan model (reverse pleat), but haven't tried it yet. I bought four pairs of Preston pants on eBay, all great buys, but the pants aren't all that comfortable. Short rise. Your advice is appreciated.

Nick Tosches in the September Esquire

Writer Nick Tosches has a short piece in the September Esquire magazine you may enjoy. Turns out Nick is a Logsdail and a Kabbaz customer. He talks about dressing for comfort, Sea island cotton, and why some men dress the way they do. Like most Tosches' pieces, it ends with you wishing he wrote more. The magazine arrived today in the mail and I could not find the article on the web.

Bleeding Madras Can Bleed You Dry!

Expensive, or just crazy stupid? Frankly, I find such pricing offensive!

To any familiar with Madras shirts during their hey day, they were made with colorful cloth imported from India. This cloth had a number of properties; it was loosely, and usually hand woven, and contained many irregularities, and it was not dye fast so that the colors would run together when laundered (Bleed.) in a manner thought very appealing. And most relevantly, it was cheap, cheap, cheap!

Such shirts have mostly been long gone from the scene. Well, they're back . . . . sort of. But since they're going to be sold to neo-traditionalists, who are mostly too young to remember the originals, they're being priced at $175.00 a piece! While this target market may less well informed, it is certainly not less well resourced, so if any wish to pay $175.00 for a nice $45 shirt this tells you where -

Johnny Carson Suits

Anyone remember Johnny Carson suits?

I owned several, probably 3-4, back in the late 1970's and early 1980's. They were suit separates with a vest and pretty sure they retailed for $99.00. Not sure what size I was back then, but they fit me like a glove and wore them right off the rack.

Does anyone have any recommendations for leather bags that are not too big to carry onto planes et al.
I'd like the bag to be sufficient to carry a slin laptop, book and some minor things, but nothing too fancy like a LV handbag! I'm not looking for a suitcase/briefcase....

Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Removing stain remover?

Hello everyone,

I have a silk & linen sport coat that had a few small stains (<.5 in^2) and I lightly dabbed them with club soda with lemon juice to remove them with success. I noticed there was a larger stain on the lapel (~1.5 in^2) and soaked the entire area and then some and now there seems to be a water ring or something where I had soaked it. How do I get rid of this? Is the dry cleaners my only option?

Sincerely,
MAWS

Help me pick a suit

I'm in need of a good charcoal stripe suit. My local store is having a Southwick and Samuelsohn trunk show in September. Essentially the MTM Southwick will be about the same price as an OTR Samuelsohn. The only details I would get on the Southwick are side vents, pick stitching, and a choice of lining. It would be in the Vitale Barberis fabric (110's I believe). The Sameulsohn is their "Performance" model and already comes with pick stitching and side vents, has standard lining, and is, of course full canvas. It is a Loro Piana "Extreme" fabric (120's I think). So, which would you choose:

Option A:

Southwick MTM
- half canvas
- side vent
- pick stitching
- upgraded lining
- VBC fabric

Option B:

Samuelsohn OTR:
- full canvas
- side vent
- pick stitching
- standard lining
- LP fabric

Perhaps the Southwick would fit a little better but I feel that the Samuelsohn is a better made garment. Not sure what to go with here.

Asymmetric Park Avenue Cap Toes

Hi Everyone,

I bought some Park Avenues during the nordstrom sale at AE, itself. My previous pair was defective, so they sent me a new pair, which were supposedly inspected at the DC location to make sure they were a good looking pair.

The left cap toe looks like it was put on "slanted", compared to the right shoe, which is perfect.

Am I unreasonable to think about returning this pair? I understand they're handmade, but I'd think that this part of the shoemaking process would be rather precise.

monogrammed silver belt buckle?

My belts have lasted a long time, but my main dress one's getting all bent up. Thinking of replacing it, I thought also of the silver monogram belt buckles sold by Tiffany and BB.

Some time back I thought about getting one, cost about $100 at the time, but since I didn't see these much around, held off.

What do you make of these things? Stupid? good looking?

Is it acceptable to wear a suit jacket as a blazer?

Bear with me...

I spotted a nice medium navy suit with a small faint check pattern. I was tempted to pull the trigger, not really because I need another navy suit, but because I figured, for the cold British winter and for ultimate versatility, I could also double up the jacket as a blazer and pair with khakis.

Is this ever acceptable?

I do sometimes wear my dark navy suit jacket with jeans (a la Raylan Givens) though I'm sure some frown upon this.

Thoughts?

High waisted pants? Where can I find them?

Hi guys,

Andy's noob here. Long time lurker, never posted, but I figured I would register and ask.

Ok. Ok. You are calling me nuts, but before we go into that, let me just put this out there. I purchased two vintage suits from the 1920s. I had both altered by my tailor so that they fit like a boss. When I look at the older suit style, in comparison to my newer suits, it really seems like the high waisted pants are the way to go. Hear me out. Not having the belt buckle and shirt peek out from under the vest/jacket just seems so right. Really. It just ties everything together. Perfectly. When the jacket and vest are on, people don't even notice. I've searched everywhere and have only been able to find two places that make them, but nobody who makes them in wool. Does anyone have any ideas? Cheers and thanks!

Size/measurements help w/overcoat/raincoat please

I bought on ebay a long time ago an old Jos. A. Bank raincoat from when they were good. It's a cool glenplaid pattern. I'm getting ready to sell it on ebay since it doesn't really fit me that well. There is no size label. Here are the measurements:
PTP - 26-1/4"
Shoulder seam to cuff - 27"
Bottom of collar to hem - 40"

What size should I list it as? The seller listed it as though it were a sport coat, and if it was, it would have fit, but it ain't.

Thanks for any help

For your consideration....

This was brought up once either here or TOF when it first came out. It's now reached almost 6 million USD in funding. It was derided and dismissed instantly as doomed to fail due to it being a complete fashion failure.

http://ift.tt/1KdPRIn

A non-clothing related forum I frequent a lot had fairly positive reception to the whole thing with discussion of which version they would buy. Only one negative reaction and it was countered with some nonsense about it was too cool for him. I thought their reaction shows where clothing is headed, where practicality and comfort beats all. Or, conversely we end up in unitards with the price/social class/personal details of said person being displayed on the virtual screen implanted in our retinas and a "knockoff" consists of a hack to the RFID chip in the clothing.
For your consideration....

Name for emblematicish shirts?

Is there a name for patterned shirts that would clearly not be worn with a suit and tie.

Not plaid.

Not striped.

Not jacquard.

Not polka dot.

I'm thinking of shirts that have a repeating pattern of smaller shapes, about an inch or less in diameter. Sort of like an emblematic on a tie, except not a formal emblem.

Is there a name for such a pattern?

I'm thinking of a shirt that could be worn with nicer casual slacks (not chinos and not khaki) and possibly a cardigan, v-neck, or maybe even crew neck sweater, could also be worn without a sweater.

Appropriate for leisure.

Dry cleaning - shrink/smell ??

samedi 22 août 2015

Hello

I recently got a couple of my suits dry cleaned for the first time.

They seemed to come out OK, but on one of the suits the trousers seem tighter which suggests some shrinkage.

Second problem is that they came back with a distinctive smell. Neither pleasant nor unpleasant, just a slight chemical smell. I recall the dry cleaners shop having this smell so I don't know if it just picked up 'shop smell' from being stored there for a couple of days. But I read that suits should come back completely odorless from a cleaners? Is that true? Or is a moderate scent normal?

Thanks

Interview Attire - Academic Interview

So from my searching, while interview attire has been covered quite well in the past, I have a couple wrinkles to introduce (though hopefully none in what I decide to wear). I have an interview for an administrative position at a VERY progressive New England university this week and I am not sure how well standard business interview notions would be perceived (or if the classics are classics for a reason). It also figures to be fairly warm the day of the interview and I will be there for 7 hours including a tour of campus. My normal, go-to interview suit is fully canvassed and wool. I am considering a tan, poplin suit that would be a lot lighter and more comfortable. Can I get away with this given the time of year and academic environment? Pictures below of some prospective combinations (worn quickly this morning - everything would be pressed, straightened, et. al the day of).

Sorry for the size of pictures. Thanks for any feedback (if there should be any).
