Vegan, organic and still looking smart, particularly shoes

mercredi 30 septembre 2015

I am a relatively recent vegan, and to boot (so to speak) have a preference for organic (notably non-artificial) materials. Most of my clothes still pre-date this, but I have already noticed that particularly regarding shoes this is somewhat tricky. So I am interested in opinions regarding what the best options are for looking well-dressed without wearing materials of animal origin (or ones made to look like they are, which to my mind half defeats the purpose of forgoing the animal materials).

The task is not made easier by the fact that many people with similar requirements have a rather non-traditional sense of dress, which people making vegan and organic clothing naturally tend to cater to. I have come to terms with the fact that I will have to make compromises given that e.g. smart shoes and leather are almost synonyms, but I am looking for ways not to compromise more than necessary.

As I said, looking forward to hearing opinions on the subject.

Advice: best bet/which looks better - 40S or 40R?

So, I've been doing lots of homework. And lots of measuring. Have traditional bought 40R, but realizing that a 40S may be more appropriate. No matter, since I'm buying several new suits and getting rid of all my old ones.

So, here we are: finger curl test - 40S works much better with no fabric balling up in cupped portion of fingers (40R, there is an inch or so of lift from the bottom). Also measured (with shoes on) bottom of shirt collar to ground..half of this measurement would be 29.5 to 29.75 for the proper sized/length jacket.

I have two identical Saks Black Made in Italy suits (from Off 5th - I've decide that these are the sweet spot for me for fabric quality, construction and price). Jacket length ranges form 29 on the short to 30.5 on the R. Neither ideal for my measurement.

If I go by the photos of suit models on various websites, the short looks like the way to go. Photos below are with jeans - which I actually may be more likely to wear the jacket with more often than the slacks (gasp!). Rise difference in pants makes no difference to me (on these Saks suits anyway), so just trying to figure out better length-wise:

So, what say you?

Just bought AE Strands (Oxblood)

I know I haven't posted much, but I just have to tell someone!

I pretty much knew this model was my next purchase, but have been waiting. They were on Shoebank a while back for $254, but I waited ( not sure why), and they disappeared. Then the sale came, and I was all set to order them at $279. Thought I'd check Shoebank again before I pulled the trigger and what do ya know! My size, color I want for $219

I didn't hesitate. Got on the phone, SA named Aaron found them and checked em over for me, now they're on the way! My fourth pair of AE shoes. Now, which ones to get next.....

Love em, or hate em, thanks for indulging me,
Carl

First post and looking for info on Harris Tweed

Hi there, first post (hope the pics are ok). I have been having fun thrifting some new clothes after losing 80 or so pounds (need lots of clothes) and have been trying to "grow up" my wardrobe a bit while I'm at it. Learning a lot of stuff on this forum.

Picked up a Harris Tweed at local Goodwill today. Trying to attach a few pictures. What can you experts tell me about it (age, etc)? It's tagged 46 Long, it fits me OK (I am between 44 and 46 now but not a Long, only 5'9" but this does not look THAT long like some). Found no real identifying marks of where it was made/sold, just the HT label, dry clean label, and the sizing label. Thinking of getting it cleaned (obviously) and trying it out at church a few times this fall and maybe paying it forward after that.

Joseph Abboud at Jos. A. Bank?

I was on Jos A. Bank's website the other day and noticed that they now/are going to carry the updated Joseph Abboud suits llike Men's Wearhouse does.

Since MW owns JAB I was wondering what their plan was for this? As it seems kind of redundant for them to carry the Abboud line at JAB if they already are at MW? Although I it does seem that Jos A. Bank ahs a bigger selection then MW of those suits at the moment.

Interesting devolpment to say the least!

Here is a link to what I'm talking about btw.

The Odyssey of Cleaning Mucked-Up Shell

Hello all,

I recently purchased a pair of shell cordovan AE Dalton boots secondhand, and the previous owner seems to have used some sort of product. The shell was very waxy and clouded - tacky to the touch. Here are some pictures of the boots upon receipt:

I then cleaned off the dirt with a damp rag and gave a cursory brush, and then went after them with some Saphir Renovateur. After two and a half gunk-filled rags and a few more hours of brushing, there is marked progress, but no where close to being complete.

As you can see, there is still quite a bit of residue and cloudiness. The beautiful luster of shell is still hidden. Here are two more photos demonstrating the residue. First, a side shot taken immediately after some vigorous brushing:

Second, the same shot after I merely brush my fingers from top to bottom:

One can clearly see the waxy haze still present. So now I come here to ask for advice - what is my next step? What products should I use that would be more effective and perhaps less expensive?

Thanks everyone in advance!

Quality formal shoes

In a few weeks I have a formal event for work. Luckily I already have a tux. However my shoes are unwearable (size wise) and need replaced.

My original intent years ago was to replace them with AE. Unfortunately it seems that AE no longer makes a true 'formal' shoe. In addition, it seems that most companies have gotten away from formal footwear entirely which severely limits my options.

After shopping around both in-store, calling around and looking online it looks like my only real options are going to be:

Florsheim Kingston - $112
Hugo Boss BOSS Black Mellio - $180
Magnanni Dante - $299
Johnston Murphy Fulcher - $250
Saks Fifth Avenue Patent Leather Lace-Ups - $230
Calvin Klein Gareth 2 - $120

There just doesn't seem to be many choices unless you want to spend $400+ which isn't something I'm willing to do on a shoe with very limited uses. I'm basically looking for the highest quality patent leather shoe I can get sub-$400 that's also comfortable.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Is there something else that I should be looking at?
Quality formal shoes

So sick of golf shirts in the office.

Not all of them, just the tech fabric type. They tend to be so unflattering, especially to out of shape older men. Unfortunately a major brand is a client right now so we are drowning in a sea of tech fabric. Ugh.

What shoe to buy on AE sale (and use for interview)?

Hi, I have an interview for graduate school programs on October so it is not the most formal event but I still want to look good and I want to buy something right now from the AE sale. Right now I work in a business casual fintech office: slacks, button shirt and sometimes a blazer. Sometimes on friday dress down with chinos and a polo or a more casual shirt. I am late twenties if it matters

I have what I consider a big collection of "good dress shoes", please find below:

  • Black bit loafers (Ferragamo)
  • Brown bit loafers (AE Verona)
  • Merlot AE Mcallisters
  • Blue AE Neumoks
  • Grey AE Park Avenues (just wear thrice in my life, difficult colour)
  • AE Mora 2.0 bourbon (love them)
  • AE Rush Street Cap toe on distressed olive

For casual wear I have Sperry boat shoes, one pair of chukkas and Dr. Martens

To the office I mostly wear the loafers and the Mora and Rush Street. Sometimes the Mcallisters on the rare occasions I wear a suit. I like to communicate a not so boring style.

So, I see two problems:
  1. I do not have a black oxford for those ultra formal events (and I don't think I need them)
  2. I do not have bluchers

So please fine gentleman could you help with these difficult decisions?:
What should I buy on the AE sale?
Right now I am shortlisting:
  • Fifth Avenue in Dark Brown or Chili(another oxford and I see it as too formal, the cheapest and less favourite of my options)
  • Yorktown in Burgundy (blucher, more modern and a colour that I love) http://ift.tt/1M1Oc59
  • Cornwallis on Dark Brown or maybe black (more sleek than the fifth avenue) http://ift.tt/1M1Oc5d

I really do not think I need the black park avenues, less you say so. Thus, two final questions:
What should I buy?
What should I wear to my interview? I will wear a mid/dark grey plain suit (not charcoal) with light blue shirt and matching tie.
I am thinking on the Mcallisters but maybe the broguing is too much and I should wear the yorktowns? Cornwallis?

Thanks so much, appreciate it.

AE Pilgrimage

Was able to arrange a business trip to Milwaukee next week - planning a pilgrimage to the shoe banks in Port Washington and Brookfield. Also see that there is an actual AE retail store (albeit with weird hours) just South of Port Washington.

Plan to hit the shoe banks and then follow up at the retail for belts and shoes on target list to take advantage of the America sale going on.

Not sure why I'm posting other than I am super-excited and would welcome any tips or advice to the extent anyone has any!

Snow/Ice vs. my good shoes...Options?

Hey,

I have invested quite a bit of money on good shoes over the past year, and I'm concerned about the havoc snow/ice/slush/salt will have on my Allen Edmonds/Alden shoes. I don't want to destroy them on my 5 block walk from the garage to my job in NYC during the winter...

What are you gentlemen doing? Galoshes? Boots for the walk with good shoes in your bag?

Any insight is appreciated!

Help form my opinion of how burnished shoes should look

As I grow older, I've started to learn that my dislikes are often colored by limited prior experience, and if I open my mind, my preconceived ideas are often mistaken. With that statement as a background, I own a few pairs of burnished shoes, and to my eye, the coloring looks streaky and haphazard. Since they are seconds, I assumed that was the nature of the beast, and I assumed it was the defect. However, after reviewing pictures of firsts, I'm reconsidering my opinion.allenedmonds_shoes_cornwallis_1055_walnut.jpgallenedmonds_shoes_fifth-avenue_bourbon.jpg

These shoe pictures (taken directly from the AE first quality website) seem streaky and blotchy, too. The first pair (Cornwallis) looks to have a bit of dark color on the side of the heel, then a patch of dark just before the vamp flares out. (I'm aware that the toe normally gets an extra darkening burnish, so I won't mention it.) Its my understanding that burnishing is accomplished by lightly maneuvering a pair of shoes around a dying/polishing roto-tool which applies the darker shade, thus allowing the coloring to be ultimately controlled by hand (and open to error.) It seems quite plausible to me that the machine operator would start by burnishing the heel and then move toward the toe, and in the process get a dark spot where the vamp extends on the side if they didn't keep a constant distance between the leather and the roto-tool. In fact, this is the main area on my own burnished shoes that seem to be darkest, either splotchy or streaky.
In the second picture (fifth aves), the side of the heel seems to be darkest, and then stripes seem to appear through the quarter. It appears to be darker along the base of the shoe near the welt, too, but that may simply be lighting.
To me, the attached pictures dont look normal, but as I mentioned previously, its quite possible that my expectations are simply not accurate. Are these pictures what I should expect from burnished shoes, or are there better examples of finished products?

Problem with identifying this suit and its color

Hello! I have been looking for a decent suit that goes well with the colors of autumn. Since I already own the classic charcoal grey suit and another lighter grey suit, I'm not looking for these colors at the moment. What I have always enjoyed, however, are lighter colors (light grey, light blue, even white), hence I have been looking mostly at light brown.

Just a few days ago I came across the 1988 movie "Bright Lights, Big City", starring Michael J. Fox. I noticed his character was wearing a very distinctive suit whose color I haven't found while looking at contemporary fashion. Most modern suits seem to be in a darker brown, have a grey cast or sport a checkered pattern. Since I'm not in the market for any of these, I thought I might come to this forum and ask its much more knowledgeable members.

Could you shed any light on what kind of color this suit is? Are there any similar suits available to purchase somewhere? Also, in a more general sense, would such a suit be appropriate today?

I would greatly appreciate all help.

Tweedydon/WaterhollowTweed is now on Facebook!

I've just launched a new Facebook page, WaterhollowTweed, available here:

http://ift.tt/1FB7nGu

The aims of this Facebook page are simple. First, it will provide information about traditional menswear, with a focus on classic Americana, such as Ivy Style and Trad. This will range widely, from information about the stores that used to sell this clothing, information about the different fabrics that it was made from, and discussions of how and wear to acquire original pieces... or their contemporary equivalents. Second, it will offer for a sale a small portion of the vintage and contemporary menswear pieces that WaterhollowTweed specializes in, ranging from tweeds to ties, and everything in between!

A 'Blog will follow shortly, focusing on Trad (and Trad adjacent!) clothing, and smallholding farming... Think of it as a combination of An Affordable Wardrobe and Muffy's old 'blog!

Affordable chukkas - Bexley, Herring, Velasca or Meermin

Hello!

I'm a university student, and I am looking to get my first pair of 'quality, affordable' chukka boots. Considering that I am a university student I do not have the biggest budget, and the boots will be for regular use at university and town, so I do not want to put that much into them. What I am looking for is a pair of shoes that will last me for 2-3 years with decent care.

I've looked around at various brands, and the one's I have identified are: Meermin's chukkas, Velasca's chukkas, Herring's Canterbury and Bexley's Greenwich.

Truth be told, I'm having a hard time choosing. I've heard good things about all brands, and I do like all of the chukka models.

The Meermin's are a tad bit more expensive because of the 20 euro delivery cost, whereas Herring and Bexley are about the same price. The best quality-to-price pair is probably the Velasca's, considering delivery and returns are free within Europe, and I also have a 20 euro discount code.

Either way, I do not have experience with any of these brands, and I was hoping to get some input from more experienced members regarding how these brands hold up.

help me buy my canvassed suit

Dear forum,

I am going to be getting several fully canvassed suits. I have it narrowed down to three places in Saint louis where I will be buying canvassed suits and custom made shirts.

1.) brooks brothers Golden Fleece. I think we all know what to expect here.

2.) a place called bespoke apparel. They will measure you in store and help you select cloth and have a tailor out of the area sew the suit together. They have several hundred fabrics to choose from.

3.) a place called expert alterations where a tailor who has been at the store for 30 years will measure you and sew the suit in site for you. He has received excellent reviews on Yelp but it looks mostly for alteration work. I called him in the phone and he said he would be happy to make suits and shirts for me and would do a great job.

Any thoughts here on which way to proceed on getting my canvassed suits made for me would be greatly appreciated.

Barbour Border NAVY 50 Amazing Condition (worn twice!)

I bought a fantastic Barbour Border Coat in the rare NAVY color, size 50--then lost a bunch of weight and I'm swimming in the thing.

GREAT COAT. Maybe a year old, but worn only 2-3 times. Wax protection shines like new, no odors, never worn in field or rain. Smoke free home. Really a steal. I'll ship for free via Fed Ex ground. $349. Glad to share more photos. Have the new in bag lapel pin too.

Thank you! - Jeff.

Cheaney sizing, any experience ?

Just had some last dimensions and sizes of sent from Cheaney. Any experience with their sizing ? The rep insists that a UK Fitting of E is their average or medium, and their length dimensions are large for other UK makes. I may have to go down one or one . 5 sizes instead of the usual one or half one size from US sizing.

Oh, relevant comments are the most sought after. Ones like , " I stick to AE" and "What's wrong with Alden? " are not.

Two shirt collar sizes - which one to return? (Shrinkage)

Hello,

I recently ordered two shirts of 100% cotton with two different collar sizes - one fits very well at the collar (15.5" / 39 cm), the other's is a tad loose (16" / 41 cm); I haven't washed either of them yet.

My question is, should I stick with the slightly bigger one despite it being a bit too loose to account for shrinkage, or should I keep the smaller 15.5" shirt, since the shrinking will be marginal only?

AE Dundee v. BB Field Chukka

I am in the market for a dark chocolate suede chukka. I would prefer something lined/constructed. After looking around, the two most reasonable options appear to be the AE Dundee or the BB Field Chukka. With the AE sale and the BB Corporate card, they are about the same price ($279 for AE w/free shipping, $255 for BB plus shipping).

The BB look more like a traditional desert boot - crepe soles, two eyelets, minimal stitching. Just speculating, but I would assume it's blake/rapid.

The AE looks a little more solidly constructed, but slightly less traditional - leather soles, contrast stitching, three eyelets, split reverse welt.

Anyone have experience with either?

Next Sport coats decision time

dimanche 27 septembre 2015

Presently I wear shirt+tie and dress trousers 3-4 days a week and add a blazer/sports coat the rest of the time. I'm looking to move towards sport coat every day so need to expand the wardrobe. I've gotten a lot of help asking and pursuing on here in the past and seem to have some of the basics but need more guidance, so thanks in advance!

Currently have: light navy blue hopsack blazer, dark grey thornproof sport coat, medium brown donegal lighter tweed, forest green herringbone heavy tweed, an old blue linen sport coat (RTW not the best quality)

Looking to get 2-3 more jackets.
was thinking something in blue or grey with a windowpane pattern, but having trouble between not to loud/obnoxious vs too subtle so looks like orphaned suit jacket. Preferably a tropical wool or wool blend to be worn in summer/spring. Any thoughts or similar alternatives?

also considering a classic black/white herringbone, probably in a worsted rather than tweed or a navy/grey houndstooth

and a more neurtral tweed like this (3rd swatch)... http://ift.tt/1O4cHol

or olive corduroy

I've always felt a bit washed out in tan/camel etc (I've got a pale complexion, dark brown hair, red beard, blue eyes, never been able to figure out which 'season' i am)

Tie-Matching Blues and next suit move question

Hi AAAC,

I don't really know how to "match" suits and ties, and so I am asking for everyone's collective advice. I read through Andy's helpful article on the color wheel, but I am not sure how to proceed.

I have a blue repp stripe tie (very similar to this http://ift.tt/1NVU3NQ in "navy-light blue"), a navy grenadine tie, and a charcoal-striped tie that I wear too often with the 4 suits I have below. I know there are other tie colors besides blue and charcoal but I am not great at tie matching.

My preference for tie color is whatever will work with the most amount of the 4 suits I currently own below:

I was thinking I would get 2 solid color grenadine ties of a burgundy grenadine and a silver grenadine. Any tie color advice?

My one other question is that I want to add a 5th suit, but I can't get too flashy or inventive with colors/patterns. Based on my observation of my other coworkers at my firm, their suit patterns are most often navy or charocal or gray solids and an occasional stripe (basically what I have). Is it a waste to repeat any colors I have? What about something like this as a 5th? http://ift.tt/1NVU0S5 Or would you go with a different 5th color?

Thanks everyone!

Will my blue nubuck oxfords go with dress pants?

I bought a pair of plain toe blue nubuck oxfords to spruce up my casual wear shoes. Would they be out of place in a business casual setting being worn with dress pants? I know they will go fine on Friday's when I sometimes wear a pair of khakis, but just wondering how they would work with blue, gray and brown dress pants?

donald trump suit jacket observation

Hi, I did an image search for Donald Trump because I was interested in evaluating the front cut of his suit jackets. However, in every pic I found of DT his jacket was opened. I found 1 or 2 pics where his jacket was buttoned but he was standing behind a pedestal.

Have you made this observation as well? Can you find any pics of DT where his jacket is buttoned and he's *not* standing behind a pedestal? Why do you think he wears his jacket this way? I guess it makes him look less detached and more like a dealmaker whereas a presentation from behind a pedestal should be a bit more "buttoned up." What's your take on this?

Salsa stain on caramel AE Kenwoods

How do you remove a salsa stain from the leather of caramel-colored AE Kenwood loafers? I wiped it off, but so far it has left behind a dark spot.

BBRF Camel Hair Topcoat

I'd love to hear what you gents think of the Brooks Brothers Red Fleece Camelhair Blend Topcoat.

http://ift.tt/1NVs3Ka

I was in the Brooks Brothers Country Club store in Grand Boulevard last night asking about it. The SA confirmed that they wouldn't be carrying and coats, because duh - Florida, so I plan to order a few sizes to try them on. What was interesting is that he provided some insight about the Red Fleece line. His comments were that it was selling well and that the main line BB customers were interested, but that the fits were too slim. BB HQ plans to "universalize" the RF fits so it can accomadate more of it's established cusotmer base. He alluded that the fits would go from very slim to just a bit slim, and that for this coat he would order a half or whole size up. Great conversation and definitely pop into their store if you're in the panhandle. There's also an Orvis 50 feet away and a really great Mexican restaurant across the street from it.

So anyways, what do you all think of this topcoat for $700? It's probably made in China et al. The price is a thousand less than the Golden Fleece version which is now made in Italy, instead of in the US as they had been in recent years. Is the construction solid or will it fall apart after one season? I'd like to know. It's also a wool and camelhair blend. I wonder what that ratio is. And since the description puts wool first, am I really getting my money's worth of camel? How many camel hairs break that ratio's back? I do like the color and the fly front. If the fit and proportions are as slim as the pictures look, it could be a nice contemporary coat that will do for a young man. That is the target market for BBRF after all?

So again, does anyone have thoughts on the BBRF camelhair blend topcoat? It's the last style I need to complete my outerwear lineup and after seeing it in the latest catalogue I'm pretty keen on it.

Epaulet New York Is Selling Mildewed Bottoms

Claim ignorance - give refund.

They sold one to me with the smell that wont come out and when I said I wanted a replacement they sent another that had been dry cleaned but the smell still lingers, so that's TWO! and you know how permeating mildew can be to a batch of clothes ,so it's their olive color at least that is not salable. It's the pants in the other thread "Epaulet New York"

Jack Erwin Shoes

This may have been posted before. However, since they only started in 2013, it couldn't have been that long ago. Anyway, does anyone have any experience with this brand? The prices seem quite reasonable for retail.

Changing the colour of a print on a hoodie

Hello! So I have a black hoodie (80% cotton) with a large print on the back side which is cyan colour (light blue). The print is slightly plastic/rubberish. I want to make the print less visible or turn it black. Is it possible to do it by dying the whole hoodie in black dye? Will the print dye black or stay light blue? Could there be any other better techniques?

Sincerely,
Perkele

Has anyone seen a BB 40% off coupon?

About this time a year ago, Brooks Brothers mailed out a batch of "40% off one item" coupons in the mail. I foolishly did not take advantage of the opportunity last time. If anyone sees or hears anything about this unicorn of a coupon, please think of me first and shoot me a message.

Do any of you have this style? What are your thoughts about it?

Opinion on Birdseye?

What is your opinion on birdseye? I set an order for the blue and brown, but I held off on the grey (I like it, but I wanted your guys' opinion). They'll be my first Birdseye suits. I haven't seen a weave I didn't enjoy looking at, so I'm not too sure how refined my judgement is on the subject. Any suggestions on suit details?

Also, opinions on grey suits in general? I'm not a big fan of them because of how few colors look coherent when paired.

Alden AF66 (9901C) steel toe tips possible to fit?

New to the forum, hi.

After scrimping, saving and re-using my mouthwash for a year I've managed to hide enough money from my family to afford a pair of Aldens..AF66s from Adam at Alden of Carmel..

I always destroy the toes on soles first so I was considering having steel toe tips installed on them before they begin their operational lives on my feet.. Looking at the soles though I'm not sure they'd even be suitable since the width of the flat area from the forward most raised area to the tip of the toe is just 11mm which wouldn't fit the tips I've seen so far on ebay.

Does anybody here have any good advice on that please? Thank you.

Are these shoes shot?

Curious your opinion on these San Remo wingtips I have had for...a long time... and only wore them whenever I wore a suit. I recently bought some new black cap toe shoes and try to toss out any old shoes when I bring new ones home to keep the closet from getting cluttered with old shoes. For some reason I'm hesitant to toss these. They say Made in Italy and shine up real easy, but the soles have some wear and the creases are my biggest concern. Keep or toss?

The Intern - a movie of interest!

Robert De Niro (who unfortunately does not whack anyone) and Anne Hathaway in a non-classic but enjoyable film.

The film features De Niro as a 70 year old intern for a high tech internet company selling women's clothes. Of interest since he wears a suit to work amongst the tee-shirt adorn kids employed there.

He makes some serious sartorial slip-ups (no dimple in his necktie knot and a short sleeve shirt with suit and tie  ) but he, through example, gets the "kids" to start dressing better!

That's not the plot, but it's what I focused on :) including the scenes in his closet!

Anyone know much about Burberry trench coat models?

vendredi 25 septembre 2015

I've been looking for a 100% cotton Burberry trench for quite a while and unfortunately the new ones are well beyond what I'm willing to spend, so I turned to Ebay.

I wound up with what looks like a pretty darned nice coat that, as far as I can tell is an authentic Burberry double-breasted trench coat. However it seems to be a model I've never seen before.

For one, its quite light weight and has no provisions for a liner, which is fine with me as I have heavier overcoats for late fall/winter. It also has no gun flap/storm flap on the front nor the trench coat throat latch.

It does however have all of the other traditional details; the d-rings on the belt, the raglan sleeves, the epaulets, hook and eye collar closure, leather buckle etc.

I've never seen a 'simplified' trench like this before with no gun flap/storm flap and no throat latch. Has anyone else? Anyone know when they made this type? Or is this just a really well made knock-off?
