Getting Shoes Re-soled

What's a good rule of thumb when considering when to get one's shoes re-soled?

I sometimes think I get them re-soled too soon; but I do so because a number of times I've waited too long and more more repair was needed.

Any advice? Tips? Thoughts Photos/blog/website would be helpful here.
