I'm in the market for a versatile quilted jacket that could be equally at home (or, rather, in the street :) with jeans and chinos on one end of the spectrum and with flannel trousers, perhaps even with V-neck sweaters and ties, on the other. If in doubt, however, I'd prefer to err on the casual side as I'm pretty well covered on the formal side already. Polyamide is fine, if construction quality and design are OK, but wool/tweed/cord would be better, although cashmere will probably be stretching it in terms of both price and durability. Slim or 'tailored' fit would be better as well. Fabric weight - well, let's just say it's mostly for 25-50F. Length - longer than a SC, for sure, but still suitable for a shorter guy (5'8'').
What brands or models would you recommend? Color is also important; i'm leaning toward olive because, AFAIK, it's one of the few colors that looks nice with both navy (think dark navy jeans) and gray trousers, but perhaps there are other traditional options.
